Over 1/3 of the entire United States population is suffering from health problems due to being overweight, and this number is growing. According to the National Center for health Statistics, 33% of the U.S. population were overweight in 1991. That's roughly 88.5 million people. So, if you struggle with weight control, you are not alone.

Yet, the same statistics show that in the black female population, a larger percentage of the women are overweight. As a black woman, and a Christian, this is of great concern to me. Excess weight is cited as the cause of many health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, yeast infections, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and several forms of cancer. Also, the more overweight a woman is, the more she is susceptible to these ailments, and is likely to get them more often. But there is hope!

The Bible says we are to "present our bodies as a living sacrifice, acceptible to God, which is [our] Spiritual worship". God considers that taking care of our bodies as part of worshipping Him. These realizations prompted me to establish the Impact! Newsletter FREE to you on the internet. Every issue will provide you with helpful information so that you can get a clear understanding of what is involved in maintaining a healthy weight. The topics that will appear in each issue are:

EDITOR'S PLATFORM: I will give you a brief overview of the topics covered in each issue, and fill you in on interesting discoveries.

NUTRITION: Did you know that we should obtain all of the nutrients our bodies need from the foods we eat, and not from dietary supplements? Yet, very little specific information is given about the various nutrients and the need for them in our daily food intake. In this section, we will discuss nutrients in a way that gives you a clear understanding of their importance to our health.

FOOD: One of the things that's easy to take for granted is the preparation behind the foods we eat. We will talk about different preparation techniques and safety procedures involved in cooking and we'll demonstrate them with fun recipes. You'll be shocked at what you discover.

BODY CARE: I know many women who are under the misconception that their appearance isn't really important because, "God looks at the heart" and they want a man who will "love me for me." The truth is the way we physically care for ourselves speaks volumes about us before we say a word. Our physical appearance is a reflection of our Spiritual health. God does not want us to be vain, but He also doesn't want us to neglect our physical care. Also, when others see that we care enough about ourselves to be well-kept, they are likely to trust us to care for other things as well. This section will offer you basic insight on skin care, hair care, and foot care so you can take the best care of you. And, contrary to popular belief, it doesn't have to cost a fortune. You can do this well, inexpensively!

WEIGHT CONTROL: "How did I gain so much weight and why is it so hard to lose?" Have you ever asked yourself this question? I have and I've discovered there is more to weight control than we realize. Here we will inform you of the major aspects of weight control and help you understand the principles involved in getting a handle on your weight, without killing yourself.

ENJOYING EXERCISE: One very important aspect about exercise is that it must be something you enjoy. It's difficult enough to maintain a regular exercise schedule without it being another "chore". In this section, I will give fun forms of exercise along with the health benefits you will get out of them. You will enjoy yourself so much while you're doing them, you'll forget you're exercising!

GYNECOLOGY: There are many women who have questions regarding their female concerns. We will give you basic information here, but remember, we are not doctors. We can give you the basics, but you should always consult with your Gynocologist for feminine care.

SOUND MIND: We believe that the mind is a terrible thing to waste. We will have interesting articles, brain-teasing games, projects, and reading recommendations to keep you sharp.

FISCAL HEALTH: Most people do not receive instruction on how to handle their money until they are deep in debt and have ruined their credit. This section will offer sound advice from various financial institutions on how to handle your money wisely so you can enjoy it, not the creditors.

RELATIONSHIPS: My Sociology professor always stressed that people are social animals. No one is an island. The people we have relationships with have a great influence on our lives. This section will offer insight on having healthy relationships. We will focus on relationships that are encouraging to both parties because, to have a healthy relationship, the benefits must be two-sided.

CHURCH LIFE: Where and with whom we worship have a huge influence in our lives. God designed Church to be a place where people come together to worship Him, to learn to apply His Word, and to receive encouragement in our daily walks. This section will focus on the challenges and blessings involved in maintaining these aspects in your Church fellowship.

QUIET TIME: Are there verses in the Bible that you are having a hard time understanding? This is where you can find out more about their meaning. We will focus on learning and applying scriptures to our every day lives. You'll be surprised at how clear the meaning behind the scriptures will become.

ARTS, CRAFTS, AND ENTERTAINMENT! Here you will find an entry of special events or craft ideas for your personal enhancement and growth. You know what they say, "All work and no play makes a person dull", we will look to have a good balance of both in our lives. This section will include activities that are clean family fun so you can spend quality time with your family.
