A picture that nicely illustrates the mess in Indian telecom is shown below. On this pole, you see the electrical wires on top, the telephone wires below them, and yes, they are stretched by the shortest possible path to the subscriber. New is the box at the bottom, which belongs to the cable TV operator, who supplies me an Internet connection from this box. The blue car behind is mine (Arun Mehta).


The issue bothering us most at the moment is the ISP VSNL's censorship of IP-phone sites. Not to mention their banning of Internet telephony itself. Click here to find out the Status of VSNL censorship of IP-phone sites

The Forum for Rights to Electronic Expression -- which worked to get rid of the licence fee on electronic bulletin boards (BBS) in 1994. There wasn't a TRAI then, so such decisions were a lot harder to overturn.

Issues Arising From the Comments on TRAI Pricing Paper -- TRAI background paper.

TRAI MTNL/Internet Policy Order

An organisation called the Society for Telecom Empowerment has been set up to make specific policy recommendations to the government of India . It currently discusses on a mailing list, which well-wishers of India from any country or nationality can join.
