A good project plan is the foundation for success, joint planning leads to understanding, cooperation and communication

- Planning enables efficient use of resources
- Planning makes adequate reallocation of resources possible
- Planning enables control of progress
Processes can be improved in several ways by planning, eliminating waiting times
- Look for cause of delay or waiting time
- Once you start a process, proceed as far as possible without stopping
- Beware of general procedures -- should they really apply to all products?
- Can activities be better tuned (deliveries postponed, etc.)?
- Minimize internal transfer operation
Eliminate activities by planning
- What value is being added and how does it relate to associated cost?
- Is all this checking, inspecting and testing really necessary (when did we reject the last time; are we effective in inspecting/testing)?
- Do all the departments (or people) have to be involved all the time?
- Why are we transporting/moving the product so much?
- Why do we do the same activity twice (duplication)?
Reduce complexity by planning
- Where can we integrate activities?
- Why are there so many different responsibilities; don't we trust the other department?
- Split the process if demands are very different?
- Reduce transport movements
- Increase flexibility of personnel and teams
Speed up activities by planning
- Which activities can be done in parallel?
- Can't documents (administration) be done in advance?
- Can we prepare most of the changeover while the process is running?
- Do we really need approval for all steps?
- Does the use of IT (automation, scanning, EDI, etc....) reduce time needed?
- Do we need to have all information on paper all the time?
