1,2,3,4 Good Friday....

Notes from a recording...."1,2,3,4 Good Friday at your house" (11m20s)

Recorded @ 250 Riddiford St, Newtown, Wellington. Good Friday 2000

This piece was edited together from recordings made simultaneously on two audio recorders, hence the delay effect. Little attempt was made to synchronise the two sets of tapes, as I was interested in maintaining the idea of moments of time and sound being slightly stretched. With the near perfection todays digital audio editing offers I wanted to stay with an analog approach, resist perfect sync and emphasise that there were in fact two recordings taking place together.

Why two recordings? One was static, the other mobile. This enabled the interior house environment to be monitored a little better, so at times we gain a sense of the space involved. A distant radio, someone walking on the floor above, the doorbell ringing in another room. Moments of sound could be captured from different spaces-differing perspectives could be offered. The numbering is a crude clapperboard, marking out new spaces of the house.

Another interest is with familiar sound. Familiar sounds constantly surround us. Acknowledge them, zoom in, stand back, slice thru layers, let it all pile up, get amongst the sounds.
