John Groves, Captain of Wagons, Fought in battles of White Plains, Brandywine, Paoli, German town, Mommouth and Wintered at Valley Forge. Captain John Grove served in the Revolutionary War, Co. G. of 13th Pennsylvania Regiment and was Commission Captain of Wagons during the Revolutionary War in 1778.

Dear Madam:

The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in claim for pension, W. 1756, based upon service of John Grove in the War of the Revolution.

John Grove was born July 23, 1750, seven miles from Philadelphia, on the Germantown Road, in Pennsylvannia. The names of his parents were not given; it was stated that they were Dutch and the name was sometimes spelt Groff.

While residing in the place where he was born, John Grove served three or four weeks as private in Captain Lansy's company, Colonel Armstrong's Pennsylvania regiment; after which he volunteered and drove his own team from Philadelphia to " Fredaricktown", Maryland, carried military stores and ammunition, length of service not given. He was commissioned in the year 1776, Captain of Wagons, was in the battles of White Plains, Brandywine, Paoli, Germantown, wintered at Valley Forge, in the battle of Monmouth, and continued in the service until the close of the war.

After the close of the war, John Grove went to North Carolina, and then moved to Kentucky.

He applied for pension April 10, 1838, then living in Jefferson County Kentucky; he lived also, in Shelby County Kentucky. The pension was allowed.

John Grove died Dec 11 1843 in Monroe County Missouri, where he had been living, only, a few months, with his son, Martin Grove.

John Grove married August 17, 1819, in Jefferson County, Kentucky, Margaret Ann Newkirk. The date and place of her birth, and names of parents are not shown.

The widow, Margaret Ann Grove, was allowed pension on her application executed June 29, 1853, at which time she was aged eightly-eight years, and a resident of Jefferson County, Kentucky, with her daughter, Mary Newkirk.

Mary Speer or Spear, daughter of John Grove, was living in 1835, in Shelby County, Kentucky.

Martin Grove, the son referred to above, was sixty years of age in 1857, then living in Monroe County Missouri.

Reference was made to Philip Hinkle, half-brother of John Grove, who was "Captain of Blacksmiths in Philadelphia" during the Revolution, also to Jesse Hinkle and Jacob Grove, who served in the Revolution. The relationship of Jesse Hinkle and Jacob Grove to John Grove was not stated.

In 1835, Charles Hinkle, Senior, and Charles Hinkle, Junior, were living in Shelby County, Kentucky; reference was made in 1838 to one W. I. Grove; and in 1855, Jacob Newkirk of Jefferson County, Kentucky, stated that he had been well aquainted with the widow, Margaret Ann Grove, "since his childhood". It is not shown that these persons were related to the family, and the papers on file in this claim contain no further discernible data relative to family.

In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, name and address of person paid, and possibly the date of death of the widow, Margaret Ann Grove, you should apply to the Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, this city, and furnish the following data:

Below was John's statement in court, given in 1833 as a prelude to his applying for a pension at age 82.

State of Kentucky
Jefferson Circuit & County Let?
April term of said court 1833-

Be it remembered that on this 10^th day of April 1833 in the Jefferson circuit court, personally appeared in said court, John Grove a resident of the said county in the state aforesaid. Aged eighty-two years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provision made by the act of congress passed June 5^th? 1832 – That he enlisted in the army of the United States in the year 1776. He was? Enlisted and took the bounty as a regular soldier at some? tavern in Fredaricktown in Maryland. That he was enlisted for Captain ?Crissupis Company and was allowed three weeks to joining the army after he was enlisted and before the three weeks expired, he went with his company to join the army that at? the? Street in Philadelphia with in three weeks. After he enlisted he was appointed a Captain in the Wagon Department by General Hilchammer who had the general command of the wagons. That General Hilchammer gave him a commission under his own name and under a large seal and that he continued in that above capacity as Capt. of Wagoners until the close of the war at the surrender of Cornwallace. That his pay as Capt. of Wagons was twenty-five dollars per month. That he was in the battle Monmouth (The British having left Philadelphia in June) The British crossed the Delaware and the American troops followed them. General Lee brought on the battle but for some misconduct, General Washington arrested him on the grounds - The American troops were victorious – that he was at the battle of Brandywine. General Washington and General Lafayette were both in command in this action- The British in this action were defeated and American troops were nearly surrounded – that he was in the Battle of Germantown- The Battle commenced? At Allen’s County, County seat? – That the Americans troops were successful and they had driven the British troops as far as Germantown marker house at which place the British were reinforced and they drove the Americans back again in this battle. General Washington was chief in command. He does not remember whether General La Fayette was in the battle or not. Blood flowed freely. That Brandwine Creek was quite bloody- That he was also in a small affair called Paoli 17 or 18 miles from Philadelphia - that he had his commission as Capt. of Wagons until within a few years past but I? Had about 40 years past he got it with his other papers so damaged that it has become illegible in crossing a stream of water in North Carolina. A wagon containing some furniture and all his papers having overturned? – That after his first enlistment, he went to Philadelphia and through the Jerseys to the North River. Thence back to Philadelphia. That he was stationed there a while then was ordered to take a number of waggons with money, provisions & clothing to White Plains, New York. – That he performed his duty and was honorably discharged but never applied for it. – That he has never received any pay or provision whatever and he does hereby relinquish every claim to a pension or annuity whatever except the present. And he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any state. Sworn and subscribed in open court, this day and year first written.
