Descendants of Gottfried Strempel
Generation No. 1

1. GOTTFRIED1 STREMPEL was born Abt. 1821 in Germany. He married JOHANNA. She was born in Germany.

Notes for GOTTFRIED STREMPEL: a G. Strempel is listed as Capt. in Comal County Militia Companies

Source: Haas, Oscar. History of New Braunfels and Comal County, Texas, 1844-1946; Hart Graphics, Inc.; Austin, TX, 1968, pp. 158-159.

There appears to be a Gottlieb Strempel and Gottfried Strempel in Captain Fritz Heidemeyer Company of Infantry Texas State Troops, 31st Brigade

As to which may have been the Capt. , identified above, I'm uncertain presently

1860 Census Records list the following

Gottfried Strempel age 39 Occupation, farmer, Native of Prussia
Wife Johanne , age 30 Native of Prussia
Ernstine 16 Native of Prussia
August 10 Native of Prussia
Elisabeth 5 Texas
Anna 3 Texas
Based on the facts above one could conclude that he family came to Texas between 1850 and 1855. This information is at odds with Elsie Strempel obituary which suggest the family came to Texas from Germany in 1857. I'm more inclined to think that the Census records are correct but I have no proof to substantiate that.

See Children below:
Fredericka and Anna may be the same person. Both have the same birth dates and the names are based on the 1850 - Anna Census Records and I think I got Fredericka Strempel from the 1870 Census Records

Children of GOTTFRIED STREMPEL and JOHANNA are:

i. ERNSTINE2 STREMPEL, b. Abt. 1844.

ii. AUGUST STREMPEL, b. Abt. 1850, Prussia.

iii. ELSIE STREMPEL, b. August 18, 1855, Germany; d. December 03, 1943, New Braunfels, Texas; m. JOHN MERZ, 1877, Hortontown, Texas N of New Braunfels, Texas; b. December 27, 1853, Wurttemberg , Germany; d. March 21, 1939, New Braunfels, Texas.

Notes for ELSIE STREMPEL:

Elise came to America when she was 2 years old, which would be in the year about 1857. She and her husband settled and raised a family in the York Creek area East of New Braunfels, Texas. She and John Merz were married in the St. Martin Lutheran Church in Hortontown, Texas, an area now in New Braunfels, on loop 337. The Church, St. Martin Lutheran Church, still stands and can be visited along with the Grave yard that stands behind it. Elise was also baptized in the same church. Elise born Elise Strempel and her husband John celebrated their 60th wedding Anniversary in 1937. John and Elise had 12 children.

Notes for JOHN MERZ: Came to Texas in Abt 1869 at the age of 16 years. Buried in the York Creek Cemetery outside of New Braunfels. The Strempels came to America somewhere between 1850-1857 and settled in the York Creek area outside of New Braunfels, Texas. Elsie, one of their children and my Great Great Grandmother was said to be 2 years old when they came to Texas. She was married by Pastor Kupfer at the Hortontown St. Martin Church. She was baptized there also. Elise was married in 1877 to John Merz and they had 12 children. 1 son and a daughter died. Her husband died in 1939. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 1937.

The information I have on Gottfried's children is based on the 1860 census records of Comal County, Texas. I don't know if all the children are listed or how many children the Strempel had. If you are interested in sharing information about the Strempel family,
