_______________COFFMAN__________

From my Coffman Family History: JOHN DEWEY COFFMAN followed in his oldest brother's footsteps and made a name and record as Assistant District Attorney of Dallas County. After the formation of the law firm of Coffman and Coffman, he specialized in civil matters. JOHN received his law license in 1928, while living in Josephine. Upon moving to Dallas, he practiced law with ERIC COFFMAN for a time and was then appointed Assistant District Attorney. JOHN COFFMAN was a United States Marine during World War I. An interesting story is told about his activities during the war in the Rebellion in Hatti. During this period there was much sickness from what family members remembered JOHN calling "Black Leg Fever." ( ** Note: This is the name of a cattle sickness, but is the name used by members of the family. HRC ** ) One of the men in JOHN'S unit got drunk one night and the Commanding Officer placed him in jail. Placed in a cell with a native that was suspected of being sick with the fever, caused a concern among the other soldiers. Many men in the unit appealed to the Commanding Officer to release the man and place him somewhere under guard pending disposition of his case. The Commanding Officer refused and the men in the unit under force of arms forced him to release the man to their custody. They locked the man up and placed him under guard. The men were arrested and tried at Court Martial and given dishonorable discharges. JOHN COFFMAN somehow managed to steal the court proceedings and got them to his father, D. G. COFFMAN went to Washington and secured the help of several Congressmen, including Hatten W. Summers, Sam Rayburn, Tom Connally and others. After an investigation, Congress enacted a law restoring the soldiers to duty and then giving them an honorable discharge. The Commanding Officer was reprimanded for his conduct. Many years later Congressman Summers visited Othella Coffman and secured dates, names and facts about the affair to include in a paper he was writing. JOHN COFFMAN married Susie Louise Cook, daughter of J. H. Cook and Eula Leah in Josephine in 1920. Two of their daughters, DOROTHY SUE and JOANNA were born in Josephine. The third daughter, MARTHA JEANNE was born in 1929 in Dallas. After the formation of the law firm, JOHN ran for a Judge position and for District Attorney of Dallas County. In both election he lost by only a few votes. While living in Dallas the family was a member of the Gaston Avenue Baptist Church. JOHN was a deacon and taught a young men's Sunday School Class. Like his other brothers he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. After the dissolution of Coffman and Coffman, JOHN moved to Houston, Texas. During World War II he was Chief Attorney for the Office of Price Administration. After the war he decided to enter the real estate and home building business. At the time of his death he was working for a resort land development. The family continued to live in Houston after the death of JOHN in 1965. DOROTHY SUE married Brian House from England, and MARTHA JEANNE married Jerry Lee. DOROTHY SUE died of a heart attack February 3, 1996 in Houston. I contacted MARTHA JEANNE in March 1996. She is living in Temple, Texas. Her husband, Lee, a career Naval Officer died of cancer. The other daughter, JOANNA, died in 1961. Susie, died in January 22, 1996 at age 95.

Amos Coffman born in 1780 in Kentucky.married Sarah Dingler,They lived in Morgan County then Jasper County before moving to Giles County, Tennessee in about 1828. Amos sold his farm to his oldest son, John Coffman, who married Orry Willson. In the early 1830's John and his family moved to Troup County, Georgia and was soon joined by Amos and Sarah Coffman and the rest of John's brothers and sisters. About `1850 they all moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama where Amos and Sarah died. No cemetery or grave marker has been located for either. Our ancestor, Leroy Wilson Coffman along with his brothers, John Green Coffman and David Crocket Coffman enlisted in the 10th Alabama Inf. written by; Harold R. Coffman

David Cook was the father of Raleigh H. Cook. David was b. about 1795 married Lucy Horton.
