REMEMBER......???


                    Get comfortable...relax...put on some soft music...close your                          eyes...and view the past. You'll be amazed at the images that                         come to mind...things you haven't thought about in years.

                        Chances are, some of the concepts below will trigger others in                           your own mind. Please share them with us...as we combine our                          individual recollections into one big collective consciousness of days long ago, in Jal, New Mexico.


Remember.........the snake dances through town, in and out of the stores (especially                          Lewis Drug) before the big games?

Remember.........the "fancy" athletic and band buses (bought in 1950?) that served                          us so well and for so long?

Remember.........the wooden football stadium that existed before the present one of                          steel and concrete was built?

Remember..........the "Rex" theater? Remember the thick velvet curtains in the                          doorway?

Remember........."Clary's Feed Store?"

Remember..........the flash flooding that would sometimes strand moviegoers at the                           Panther Drive In?

Remember..........when the only water tower was the one by the present day post                           office?

Remember..........where the previous post office was?

Remember..........where the post office was before that?

Remember........."Hammond Combest?" His incredible memory?

Remember........."Pender's Dept. Store?"

Remember..........the rear-end of a 1959 chevy?

Remember..........burning trash in the city limits, in a 55 gal. barrel, on a still                          autumn night, and how the sparks would float skyward.                          Remember throwing a "large" nickel balloon into the updraft and                          seeing it carried up into the darkness?

Remember..........buying that nickel balloon from "Exa Curtis" at the City News                           Stand?

Remember..........opening day of the Lewis Drug on the corner, and the free ice                           cream?

Remember..........the traveling magicians who would perform in the school                          auditorium?

Remember..........the pool hall?

Remember..........driving to an out-of-town game, your car decorated with blue and                           gold crepe paper..........and then it rained?

Remember.........."Spruill's?" Remember their "enclosed" produce room?

Remember..........sand hill parties?

Remember.........."Jett's Dining Room?"

Remember.........."Bill's Bar?"

Remember..........moving to the "new" elementary school with it's space-age lights                          and flip-top desks?

Remember..........the railroad depot?

Remember..........your first hula-hoop? Your first frisbee?

Remember..........the sandstorms? I mean...THE SANDSTORMS! They don't                           have them anymore...not like that!

Remember..........the two "basement" classrooms at the old elementary school?

Remember..........when the cafeteria was downstairs in the high-school building?

Remember..........the old tennis courts behind the auditorium?

Remember.........the old gymnasium? Before the north (home) side was remodeled?

Remember..........the prom?

Remember..........400's? (hint...Ikie's...Lewis Drug) How about a                           lime-on-the-rocks?

Remember.........the "ice" at Ikie's? The paper cups and stainless steel cup holders?

Remember..........J.L. Burke "personally" giving you a candy cane?

Remember..........the city park in the north part of town, when it was new?

Remember.........."the smell" of natural gas? Sorry...shoulda left that one out.

Remember.........."the D-Bar?" The "Milky Way?"

Remember..........the "Platter-Club Dances?"

Remember..........the library, when it was in the west end of the high school                           building?

Remember..........the smell of "Homecoming mums?" The "Homecoming                           Parades?"

Remember..........the "taboo" phrase in Mrs. Marshall's class?

Remember..........the "lighted" half-time-shows of the '50s?

Remember...........the toasted roll and ice cream at Ikie's?

Remember...........the Texas Pacific Camp?

Remember...........Mrs. Marshall's rock house?

Remember...........the pipeline road to the Pecos River before the Carlsbad Hiway?

Remember...........the opening ceremonies for the Carlsbad-Jal Highway?

Remember...........the wrestling matches at the Community Center?

Remember...........the "old" Home Economics building, over by the old gym?

Remember...........the caterpillars that covered the road one summer and stripped
                           the countryside bare?

Remember...........the "Beat" tags sold by cheerleaders before each big game?

Remember...........the "chili-deal" at Ikie's Drug Store? (open-faced hot dog with                            chili and potato chips on top)

Remember...........sneaking into the Panther Drive-In movie in the trunk of a car?

Remember...........coach Wickersham's cheer? (Go back, go back, go back into
                           the woods...etc.)

Remember...........choir practice with Miss Wilson, when everone actually
                           harmonized?

Remember...........excused absence the day before deer season opened?

Remember...........when the "in" thing to do after the prom was to go to
                         Balmorhea, TX and the world's largest natural swimming pool?

Remember..........."KOMA", night time listening radio from Oklahoma City,
                         and the KOMA Kissing Tone?

Remember...........where McKeown's Dry Goods was located before the plush
                         stone and glass building was erected across from Ikie's?

Remember...........driving through a dense cloud of black smoke from the 'Carbon
                           Black Plants' (on the way to Hobbs) with your headlights on?

Remember...........the Kermit swimming pool (at the Winkler County Park)?

Remember...........Roy & Rena's Bar?

Remember...........Roy Orbison playing 'in person' at a local dance?
