Reasons to Celebrate
By: Lina Brav
Michaela woke up with the bright morningsun shining down at her face through the window. She raised on her elbow and looked at Sully, who was still sleeping. Then she started to play with his brown locks of hair that was spreading over the pillow, to make him wake up.
A few minutes later he was still asleep. "Then Ill have to do this" she thought and kissed him gently. He finally opened his eyes and found himself looking straight into Michaelas unusual eyes, one brown the other green.
"Mmm Good morning" he said and kissed her back.
"Good morning my love" she replied when they parted.
"Remember what day it is today?" he said with a big smile.
"No " she said, hiding a smile.
"You dont?" he said surprised before he realized that she was teasing him.
"Of course I do. How could I forget? Our third wedding anniversary."
"Ive got plans for it."
"You have?"
"Yeah, but I wont tell you."
"Please, tell me!" she pleaded.
"No. Itll be a surprise. Youll have to wait until I pick you up at the clinic in the afternoon."
"But "
"No but" he answered and made her quiet by kissing her lovingly.
Michaela was sweeping the floor at the clinic with a puzzled look at her beautiful face. She wondered what Sully had planned. A surprise he had said. In fact she had a surprise for him too. A few days ago she had found out that she was pregnant again. It had been hard not to tell him but she was determined to save the big news for this special day.
She looked at the clock and sighed. It was a whole hour until Sully would come and pick her up.
At the same time Sully was fixing up some things for his surprise. He left Katie with Dorothy before he went to Graces to pick up a heavy basket filled with chicken, pie and other good stuff.
Michaela took out a small packet from the bureau in one of the recovery rooms at the clinic. It was wrapped in plain brown paper with a red silk ribbon around it. This was another surprise from her to Sully. She had been thinking of a special gift for weeks. Then one day while she was cleaning the homestead she had found a photo of her and Sully that was taken during their honeymoon in Denver. She figured this would be a great gift so she had Robert E to make a frame for it.
She went downstairs and put the packet in her medical bag just before Sully opened the door.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
"I hope so but since I dont know your plans Im not sure I am. Should I have chose a fancier dress?" she said a little hesitant, looking down at her plain blouse and skirt.
"No, Michaela. Youre as great in those clothes as you always are" he said and laid an arm around her tiny waist.
"Thank you" she replied, smiling at him, and grabbed her bag.
They walked out of the clinic and when Sully helped Michaela up in the wagon he couldnt resist tickling her.
"Sully Dont Stop it!" Michaela giggled.
"Youll have to pay me" he said.
"What?" Michaela exclaimed, now laughing.
"Give me a kiss and Ill stop" he whispered with that special voice he only used to her. Michaela leant down and kissed Sully to make him stop and it worked. He climbed up beside her, took the reins and began driving.
"Where are we going? And where are Brian and Katie?" she asked a little worried. She was always worried about the children when she didnt know where they were.
"Brian is with Matthew and Dorothy is looking after Katie" he replied and placed his right arm around her shoulders. "You dont have to worry about them today. This afternoon, evening and night its going to be just you and me."
"Oh, Sully. Youve arranged everything. I love you more than youll ever know."
"Love you too."
Sully stopped the wagon and asked with a smile: "Remember this place?"
"No " Michaela said thoughtfully, looking around.
"You dont?" he said a little disappointed.
The she spotted the big oak and gasped. "Oh Sully, sure I remember. This is the place where Katie was born!"
"Figured this would be a special place to celebrate a special day" he said as he helped her down from the wagon. Michaela walked towards the oak and suddenly all the memories of Katies birth overwhelmed her. The pain of the contractions, the tiredness and the happiness when she had first heard the baby scream. This would be a great place to tell him of the pregnancy.
"Do you like it?" he asked a little anxiously when she didnt answer.
"Sully, I love it! This is truly a place of love" she said with a happy smile.
They sat down and leaned back against the oak.
"What do you mean?" he asked and put an arm around her shoulders.
"I mean that Katie was born here and shes brought to the world by our love. And now were here because of love."
"Youre right. And heres another thing thats brought to you by love" he said and kissed her. When they parted Michaela stretched out on the ground and placed her head in Sullys lap. He began caressing her long auburn hair as she said softly "This was the most perfect gift you could ever give me and I love you for that. Ive got something for you too. A little gift and a big surprise. Lets start with the gift." She reached out, opened her bag and gave Sully the packet. "What is it?" he said curiously.
"Open it and youll see."
Sully removed the red silk ribbon and unwrapped the plain brown paper. Inside a little box laid a heart-shaped frame in the finest, smoothest wood and in the middle of it a photo, of him and Michaela, was placed. "Its from our honeymoon!" he said, and Michaela could see in his eyes how much this gift meant to him. "Look at the other side" she said. He turned the frame and there was a little note that said:
With all my love,
Michaela
These few words were enough to express all her loving feelings for him.
"Thank you so much, Michaela" he said and lowered his head to give her a passionate kiss. Then he put the gift aside and continued caressing her hair. "Want to hear the big surprise now?" she asked with excitement in her voice. Before he had a chance to answer she continued. "Were going to have a baby! Katies going to have a little sibling."
"Are you sure?" he asked with eyes shining of love and happiness.
"Positive" was Michaelas reply as Sully placed his hand on her still flat stomach.
"Hello, little baby. Im sure your ma is hungry, dont you think so?"
Michaela smiled at this as he opened the basket and began feeding her with chicken.
All the food was eaten and the sun was setting in the sky. Michaela was sitting close to Sully with his strong arms around her. "Its so beautiful here" she said.
"Mmm Ive been thinking of what you said before about this being a place of love."
"And?" Michaela said looking at him. But he didnt have to answer. She knew that look in his eyes. "Here?" she asked a little doubtful.
"Yes, why not?" he replied with a kiss.
"Yes, why not?" she thought as their kiss deepened.
It had been a wonderful afternoon that they both had enjoyed and Michaela knew that the night would be even, more pleasant.
The End
