Responses to Racism of Silence:

J.C.: The analogy of whites in the U.S. and whites in Nazi Germany is a valid one, I think. I often compare my life as a white living under the shadow of our racist system to that of a white in apartheid conditions, only less explicitly up against the wall. In some ways it is more perplexing to be a race traitor here, since there are often not laws against our actions - but there are implicit rules and a lot of conditioning to go against. This analogy brings up the question, for me: when is it time to leave the country that allows and fosters such injustice? Are escapees from an apartheid regime still fighting it? Is it an act of compliance to stay? Most situations are not perfectly clear-cut: we fight some parts of the system and try to do enough good that we can feel that we are part of the solution not the problem.
