"FORCES OF NATURE"

Forces of Nature
Usually, I avoid chick movies like the plague, but I like Sandra Bullock, and Ben Affleck is fun to watch on-screen. Also, the trailer made it seem like the movie might be mindlessly entertaining, though it would no doubt be another predictable romantic comedy. "Forces of Nature" turned out to be an enjoyable movie with a ballsy ending that had some genuinely funny moments.

What made the movie work so well for me was the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck and the ending. I think that many peoples' opinion of the movie may be based entirely of what they thought of the ending, and I think that it ended perfectly, but there are many who feel otherwise.

"Forces of Nature" was written by Marc Lawrence. He wrote a Michael J. Fox movie called "Life with Mikey" several years ago, but not much else. I didn't see "Life with Mikey," but I liked "Forces of Nature," even though it followed many of Hollywood's favorite formulas. It was directed by Bronwen Hughes who directed "Harriet the Spy." She has an interesting style, and she shot this movie very "MTV." I woulda thought that it wouldn't work for a romantic comedy, but somehow, it did. My biggest problem was the computer-animated weather. It was unnecessary, and it looked very fake. It was done by PDI, the same guys who did work on another Dreamworks movie, "Antz." I guess the time and budget wasn't enough to make the CG look good here.

Most of the comedy worked, especially one hilarious scene in a strip club. Sandra Bullock has incredible charm, and Ben Affleck manages to somehow make his boring character seem interesting. Also, there were some hilarious scenes with Steve Zahn, who's always good for a few laughs. Maura Tierney looks sexier than I've ever seen her, and she plays her character beautifully. Sadly, this movie has been getting a lotta press lately because of David Strickland's appearance in it. He's a regular on "Suddenly Susan," and he recently killed himself.

This is a very cute movie that has great chemistry between the two leads and a very satisfying ending. I must say, it wasn't bad… for a chick movie.
