Though seemingly marketed as an action-filled, special effects-laden horror movie, "The Mummy" is at least two out of three. There's plenty of action, and loads of special effects, but the only thing scary in the movie is how much Arnold Vosloo (he plays "Imhotep," the mummy) looks like Billy Zane. The movie is like a diet "Indiana Jones" movie, but it takes itself less seriously.
I'm not a fan of Brendan Fraser. I mean, he was good in "School Ties," but every movie he's in seems to look kinda stupid. Because of that, I don't really have a lot to go on about him except that he's in movies that look stupid (to be fair, several people I've spoken to spoke highly of "George of the Jungle" and "Blast from the Past"). I ended up being very surprised at how good he was in this movie. He played a "Mr. Hero Guy" kinda role, and he was perfect. Rachel Weisz (I don't know much about what she did prior to this role) was just fine as "the girl," and John Hannah (he was Gwyneth Paltrow's romantic interest in "Sliding Doors") was funny, but annoying, as her brother, the obligatory comic relief.
"The Mummy" was written and directed by Stephen Sommers, the same guy who did the horrid movie, "Deep Rising" (okay, I didn't see it, but I HEARD that it was horrid). He also did "Jungle Book" and "The Adventures of Huck Finn." I can only judge his work in this movie, and as a director, he knows what he's doing, and he knows how to shoot scenes with lotsa computer-generated effects.
Though I liked "The Mummy," it got a bit TOO campy at times. I'd
go so far as to say that this is a great kids movie, though I can
assure you that both kids AND adults will enjoy the ride that this
movie provides.
