Mississippi Interstates

Overall, Mississippi has a good interstate system. The main two interstates intersect in the state's largest and Capitol city-Jackson (I-55 and I-20). The other two main interstates (I-10 and I-59) exist for traffic to pass through to other states. However, Hattiesburg and Biloxi do benefit from these highways.

Work on the interstates in MS begain in the early 1960's and the last major segment was completed of I-10 east of Biloxi in the 1980s. Interestingly, the first major interstate work was I-55 out of Memphis to near Grenada. My father thinks it is odd that Memphis seemed to be a higher priority that Jackson,"They ended up funneling north MS traffic up to Memphis to do business there instead of in Jackson." I-55 was not completed from Canton to Vaiden (a key central MS segment) until 1973 and the main route-US 51 was/is a very poor 2-lane road.

Mississippi uses a standard mile marker system that assigns exit numbers based on the previous mile marker. Multiple exit numbers may share a number with the added designation of a letter A, B, C, etc.. Sometime in the 1980's MS changed to this system from a numerical sequential system that started with Exit 1 and proceeded incrementally. In both cases, as is the Federal standard, exit numbers begin West and South and increase as you go North and East.

I will reserve other comments to be contained within the individual interstates below:

I-10

Traffic along the Gulf Coast uses this interstate as the route of choice. MS built the road far enough away from the coast to make this road a viable hurricane evacuation route. It crosses the state 5 miles north of the major cities on the coast - Biloxi, Gulfport and Pascagoula. Because of the environment sensitivity of the area, I-10 east of Biloxi to Alabama was the last part of the system to be completed in the state.

I-20

Motorists going form coast to coast often choose I-20 through Mississippi to take them between the major cities of Dallas and Atlanta. This Interstate carries a lot of trafic through the state but it also services the Capital City of Jackson as well as Meridian and Vicksburg. The road is in good shape in many areas, however expect to find a roller coaster effect where portions of the road have sunk a few inches in soft soil. This problem is notable near Forest, west of Clinton and somewhat in Jackson proper.

Mississippi's only interstate bypass covers the city's northwest quadrant. This corridor has not seen as much development as some bypasses such as I-459 in Birmingham. However, the area around the Metro Center Mall on the southwest terminus grew significantly in the late 70's shortly after road opening and more recently, the County-line Road area near the north terminus has grown significantly around a new mall development.

This is the potential new number for the limited access route being established between Memphis and Birmingham via US 78. MS has completed this route in its entirety but Alabama is only a few miles into their section of the road. In addition, Tennessee may need to upgrade the section of US 78 connecting with I-240 in Memphis. MS 302 is an alternate route to connect I-22 with I-55.

I-30 (proposed)

The Memphis-to-Atlanta Interstate that passes through or near Huntsville, AL could be renumbered as an eastward extension of I-30. Or, it could receive I-28, I-32, I-34, I-36 or I-38 designation. However, recent news in mid-1999 indicates that Mississippi plans to finish the 4-laning of US 72 later in the year and be finished with this route. Even a full 4-lane US 72 is a good alternate to a full-fledged interstate. A discussion of the Nonconnah Parkway in Memphis that may be eventually tied into this new interstate is <HERE
