How autistic is my child?
This is the most difficult question to answer. Currently, there is no objective measure of how severe the autism is in an individual child. Typically, we describe people as mildly autistic when they have normal intelligence. However, there are people who have normal intelligence who also have many of the symptoms of autism and thus, appear very autistic. There are other people who score lower on intelligence tests but, have fewer symptoms and have milder forms of the disorder. At this point in time, we do not have an objective way of determining how autistic a person is. Time will tell. It is very important that autism be viewed developmentally and as a lifetime disorder. Long term planning and periodic reassessments are essential to monitor persons with autism and alter their programs as needs change.
