The Internet as a Jobhunting Tool
Since the late eighties and especially the early nineties, the Internet has worked its way into the consciousness of the public. In the past five years, however, the growth of the Internet as a device for communication, entertainment, and business has been astounding. Today, the Internet is an invaluable tool for finding business information. No longer are jobhunters limited to library directories or directly contacting the firms they wish to find more information on. The Internet today allows for quick and easy access to all types of company information for many industries. Of course, there are still companies who are not on the Internet, and there is information a jobhunter may want that can only be obtained through traditional methods. Often, these companies wish to preserve their privacy and keep their information out of the hands of the public.
These links provided below are in no way a definitive collection of links to find company and industry information; however, they are useful for navigating your way through the World Wide Web. STARTING POINTS...SEARCHING THE WEB
EZ Find at the River: EZ Find is a great starting point for searching the World Wide Web. It allows the user to search with 10 different search engines (although not simultaneously) including Yahoo!, Excite, and Lycos.
The Dogpile: Don't be scared by the name--The Dogpile is the premier multi-search engine . It allows the user to simultaneously search with 15+ engines.
AOL : If you have America OnLine, be sure to check out the Research & Learn Channel. Just click on BUSINESS and you'll be connected to numerous business directories and links. A great service!
Google! : A great, new search engine! Very powerful and easy to use. Hey, do a search right now!
COMPANY INFORMATION
Hoovers: Great site for public company information. Links to webpage, gives a quick financial overview, lists executives, gives a brief company capsule, and links to a search of recent company news.
FreeEdgar: Premier site for up-to-date financials for public companies including SEC filings and often a company profile.
CorpTech Corporate Information: CorpTech is a subscriber service that provides some free information on the 45,000 high-tech companies in its database.
GSI: Lists public companies with links to their websites.
Yahoo! Business and Economy: Listings of companies on-line sorted by industry (searchable).
IndustryNet: Searchable database of industrial companies. Gives basic contact information and sometimes a full profile. Registration necessary, but it is free.
American Business Register: Excellent for finding small companies or branch locations. Only gives address and phone #, however.
JOBTRAK Companies: Hundreds of links to webpages of actively recruiting companies.
Company Link: Lookup news and contact info on over 65,000 companies in this free, searchable database.
Corporate Information: Great starting point! Search by public, private, international, or regional. Lots of links to searchable databases and company lists.
The Boston Globe 100 (1998): The Boston Globe lists its top 100 companies plus a whole lot more! Profiles on top companies, articles, and lists.
Lycos Business Links: Lycos Search Engine and Dun & Bradstreet team to allow the user to search for over 100,000 companies. Limited information for free, but does link to webpages.
