Hunter Family

James Madison Hunter came to Franklin Co., Arkansas as a young man from North Carolina.  He was a very prosperous man, and as a Justice of the Peace, his signature appears on numerous documents in Franklin Co.  He owned a plantation and about 25 slaves near Branch, Franklin Co., Arkansas.  At the time of his death, James was co-owner of a hardware store in Webb City, Franklin Co., Arkansas.  The other partner gave James' heirs the accounts receivable that were uncollectible as their part.  The partner took what was left and founded Speer Hardware in Fort Smith, Arkansas, a very successful wholesale store for the next 100 years.

James is buried in the Hunter Cemetery which is located on land that was part of his plantation.
