As a group, Buckskinners are among the most patriotic Americans. The constant research and attempts to understand the past puts the Reenactor in close personal contact with the writings and thoughts of the Framers of the Nation.
Books, newspaper accounts, court records, journals, diaries and letters, written at the time, are the standard reference materials that are used. These are known as "Primary Sources".
Secondary sources are later research that is based on primary sources. An example would be a diary of your Great-grandfather during the Gold Rush days as a primary resource, while the secondary source would be the family legend of his exploits as told by someone else and written down by Aunt Edna for her genealogy records.
The secondary source is not necessarily wrong, but it is suspect due to the tendency of skipping parts while distorting or adding "facts" to other parts.

Back during the forming of this Nation, politics were a major interest, as it is now. Many discussions took place, letters were written, speeches made and public discourse recorded. Reading the primary sources, it often seems as though they are fiction when contrasted against the present day. The intent is very clear. Perhaps the original writings need to be made public once again. As a minimum, I believe reading the Federalist Papers by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay should be a requirement during high school US Government courses.
The Federalist Papers are the combined "Letters to the Editor" written and published to sway the general population of the newly formed United States under the Articles of Confederation into disbanding and reforming, adopting the Constitution instead. They were primarily aimed at the inhabitants of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia and New York, as the main States resisting the desolving of the Federal Government. In the Federalist Papers, the intent, reasoning and purpose of the Constitution are explained. As history has shown us, it caused a complete changeover of the Government.

We are at a turning point in the history of this Nation. The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States has become the issue that will define the power of Government to regulate the population. An effect of this battle may well be the death of our hobby.
The first ten amendments are collectively known as the Bill of Rights. There were many arguments on the advisability of including them in the Constitution. In Federalist Paper 84, Alexander Hamilton argued that the Bill of Rights was unneeded because the Government only had the power to perform those duties listed in the Constitution. He went on to say,

"We the people, of the United States, to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Here is a better recognition of popular rights than volumes of those aphorisms which make the principle figure in several of our state bill of rights, and would sound much better in a treatise of ethics than in a constitution of government.
But a minute detail of particular rights is certainly far less agreeable to a constitution like that under consideration, which is merely intended to regulate the general political interests of the nation, than to a constitution which has the regulation of every species of personal and private concerns."

He lost the argument and the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. After much discussion, it was decided that the most inviolate rights needed to be listed, not to remunerate the rights, but to demonstrate that there were rights that were held by the people that Government could not take away. The 9th and 10th Amendments spell this out very plainly.

For every "privilage" there is a duty. For the "privilage" of being able persue this hobby, the duty is to remain informed of events that may affect your right to be a 'skinner and then act on that knowledge. If You don't perform the duty, who are you allowing to do it for you?
If you refuse to become knowledgeable, communicate your opinions to your elected Represenatives and vote, you get the representation in Government you asked for. You also abandoned your "right" to complain about the outcome.
Unfortunatly, your inaction affects the rest of us also.....

Federal Election Commission Advisory Opinion Number 1998-22
Leo Smith decided to post a political page on his website. The Federal Elections Commition decided that because his computer was worth more than $100, he had to register with the Gov't and post the rest of the political campaign boilerplate. Then they decided that his computer, software and time came to more than $1000, so he had to register as a Political Action Committee....
