 gold to his brother Hezekiah Porter in 1864; he rode West into Iowa and
 Missouri looking for land prospects, carrying the gold in a money belt
 around his waist; he decided that Missouri was still too wild and decided
 to buy land in Iowa; shortly after the end of the Civil War, he brought
 his family to Keokuk County,IA
-Theodore Porter and Sarah Hurford were separated about 1884 and presumed
 divorced; in 1898 he traded his farm for the hotel in Martinsburg and
 later traded again for the Odd Fellows Hall where he lived in an apart-
 ment; he forbade his family to ever mention her name in his presence
 again; after the separation Sarah bought a house in Hedrick, Keokuk co,IA
