CAYA... HSB... WDYSLN?... TMWSTW... FAQ... What are all of those darn acronyms??

This page will help you recognise what all of those acronyms used on AMN or all throughout the Internet mean. I will try to only include ones that are used in AMN frequently, or are Nirvana related. E-mail me any I may have (gasp!) missed (as if that's possible.)

  • AOL: America Online
  • ASAP: As Soon As Possible
  • AU: A type of audio file
  • AZ: Aero Zeppelin
  • BAS: Been A Son
  • BDFR: Bureaucratic Desire For Revenge
  • BIAJ: Born In A Junkyard (a bootlegger name for Token Eastern Song)
  • BLN: Big Long Now
  • Boot: Not an acronym, but an abreviation for 'bootleg'
  • B/W: Well, this one's an enigma. I've heard several accounts, but I believe the correct one is "Backed With." (IE: Love Buzz b/w Big Cheese = Love Buzz backed with Big Cheese as the b-side); used with singles.
  • CAYA: Come As You Are. This can refer to either the song or the book, "Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana" by Michael Azerrad. It is one of the most reliable sources of Nirvana information available, and is highly recommended to buy/borrow/steal/whatever and read.
  • CD: Compact Disc
  • CD-R: Compact Disc Recordable
  • CL: Courtney Love & (back by popular request) Chris Lawrence
  • CUBSC: Clean Up Before She Comes
  • D&C: Dazed & Confused (a Led Zeppelin cover)
  • DAT: Digital Audio Tape
  • DG: Dave Grohl
  • DGC: David Geffen Company (Nirvana's record label)
  • DGCRV1: DGC Rarities Volume 1 (a compilation album featuring the Nirvana song, Pay To Play)
  • DITD: Down In The Dark
  • DN: DejaNews (a free UseNet reading/posting service - http://www.dejanews.com)
  • DP: A large amount of people refer to David Perle, an avid AMN/HSMB/DSML reader/poster, as "DP."
  • DSML: Doll Steak Mailing List (a spawn of the HSMB, this is for non-Nirvana related discussion by Nirvana fans.)
  • DY: Drain You
  • DYLM?: Do You Love Me? (that's a KISS cover, not a question.. I know you all love me)
  • EG: Latin for 'exempli gratia', for example
  • EIHY: Even In His Youth
  • EN: Endless, Nameless
  • EP: Extended Player (longer than a single)
  • ESC: Evergreen State College (home of KAOS radio)

  • Floyd: Not really an acronym, but an abbreviation (?) for Floyd The Barber
  • FM: Fecal Matter (a pre-Nirvana band with Kurt)
  • FMD: Fecal Matter Demo (the "holy grail" of Nirvana bootlegs)
  • FMQ: Fecal Matter Quest (a group of bootleg collector's who have searched for, found, and made many shows/demo tapes available to trade to Nirvana fans on the net.)

  • Gallons: Not really an acronym, but an abbreviation (?) for Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip

  • G'N'R: Guns 'N' Roses (a hair metal band from the 80's/early 90's)

  • HOTH: High On The Hog (a TAD cover)
  • HQ: Hairspray Queen
  • HSB: Heart-Shaped Box
  • HSCN: Here She Comes Now
  • HSMB: Heart-Shaped Mail Box (a Nirvana discussion list)
  • HTML: Hyper Text Markup Language (a computer language for publishing on the internet... I am using HTML for this site, as we speak.)
  • ICQ: This is actually a pun (yeah! Puns rule, dude!). It is a play on words for the phrase "I Seek You"... cool or what? Anyway, it is a chat program which allows you to chat in "real time" and has other features such as letting you know if a person on your contact list is online or not and paging. If you have ICQ, submit your name to be included on the AMN ICQ page.

  • KAOS: Not sure what it is an acronym for/if it is one. It's a radio station at Evergreen State College, in Olympia, Washington.

  • SHA: Sweet Home Alabama (a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover)
  • SIC: Not really an acronym. It's latin. Here's what it means, according to my good friend, Merriam-Webster: "Intentionally so written (used after a printed word or phrase)." Here's an example. If a magazine article said, "Kurt Cobain's body was found on April 11, 1994 by his butler." You would write "Kurt Cobain's body was found on April 11, 1994 by his butler [sic]." to show everyone that it was the magazine's mistake, not yours.
