SEPTEMBER 1968: BRISCOE B SOUTH QUADRANGLE 1968, ROOM 1017

BRISCOE 1968::: Sept 6, 1968: Johnny Carson makes news by refusing to appear on his show as NBC said it would pre-empt part of it for football game,,, This was the year that national TV were prepared to show IU games due to last season's near national-championship.,,,,, INSTANT REPLAY by Jerry Kramer reviewed: Sept 14,1968 ____________ SEPTEMBER 1968:::_ In either late August or Early September 1968 I was walking along in Lower Manhattan waiting for school to start and I happened upon the place where they sold Pan-Am tickets. Being 18 and having no idea that Pan-Am did not do domestic flights but only International ones I went in to ask about a flight to Weir Cook airport in Indianapolis. Inside were a bunch of model-looking girls in their 20s in the middle of round counters. I say, "Excuse me. I have to get to Bloomington, Indiana and..... " Right then, she interrupted me haughtily and started talking to the other girls inside their weird disc-counters. "Where? I never heard of it" and so on. Extremely haughty and rude. I had no idea what was going on. So I left. I had ridden on EASTERN and TWA so I went to one of them and got a flight,,,,,,, On the day I was to return in early September 1968 I had my bags packed the night before. I got up and my parents had both already left for work. I had to get to Kennedy International Airport (always named Idlewild when I was a kid) all the way on the far side of NYC. I lived in the very northwest corner of Queens and it was all the way down in the southeast corner of Queens, south of Brooklyn (Queens, the largest borough, wraps around Brooklyn). I left very early just in case. I carried my bags out of my empty home and locked the door behind me. I had no idea that it was the very last time I would ever see my home at 21-11 24th Road, Astoria. I was there from age 9 in Feb 1959 until age 18 in Sept 1968. I think I then lugged my bags all the way to the elevated train station over Grand Central Parkway overlooking the Triboro Bridge. I then had to go all the way south into Manhattan and change somewhere to go all the way through Brooklyn and into lower Queens. A very long, tedious subway ride for many miles. I finally got out of the subway onto a very wide street I had never seen before. There were buses stopping there but I had no idea which one was mine and it all took far longer than I imagined. I still recall like yesterday my standing there. I was getting dangerously close to missing my flight and losing the ticket money and having to go all the way home. I saw a taxicab speeding towards me from the right, across the wide street. I took a gamble and raised my hand high. Adults were around me. The cab, while passing me, suddenly made a speeding U-turn thru traffic and flipped around right up to me. I hopped in the back with my bags. I said, "I have to get to Idlewild right away. Get me to my plane in time and Ill give you five bucks more." Mister Bigshot!- But it was worth it to me to not lose my $25 half-fare ticket and go home in disgrace. So off he went. He commented on how I still said 'Idlewild' and said he did the same. It was still a LONG ride. He got me there and he got his tip. I dont recall the plane ride. I vaguely recall waiting for it. I recall bits and pieces from many plane rides but dont know which was which. We probably had to change planes in Pittsburgh. I was there many times and I recall the red CALDER mobile, the different levels, the mens room, and the movies being shown. We got to Weir Cook in Naptown. I dont know if I shared a cab to Bloomington with a bunch of other students, took the shuttle bus down, or went into town and took the Greyhound down. Over the years I did them all depending on the connections. But I did get to Briscoe which I had not slept in since August 1967. I think I vaguely recall my first day pulling up in Sept 67 and I KNOW I remember seeing guys throwing Frisbees on the round lawn in the center of the traffic circle leading to Briscoe. I had no idea they were called Frisbees and thought they were just plates or something. I dont recall seeing any of them in NYC during the Summer of 68. Perhaps they started on college campuses. I then went into the front of the center building and around to the desk I went to in Aug 67. They then gave me my room assignment. I then went out and to the right (In 67 I went to the other bldg). Up the elevator for the very first time and to the 10th floor which I thought was the top floor. I then searched for, and eventually found, my room 1017 in the 'privates' hall. (Which was like the bar on the letter 'A'). Now I was in the same position I was in Sept 1967. After dropping my bags on my bed I was tired from the trip but didnt know anyone and was self-conscious and wasnt sure what to do. So I went out. I have no idea where I went on that first day. Did I re-visit Parks-Wright immediately? Did I just wander campus? Into town? To the mall? I dont remember. __________ ___________ I had to go through the regular Registration procedure this time as I didnt go to Early Registration during the Summer. I do recall phoning some girl that was in line with me during Registration for one of my classes. This year I couldnt take any Astro courses, just Physics ones. I took a P221 course (5 credit hours) with all the stupid labs and crap. Another German G202 (5 hours) with their labs and recitation classes. And, I think Calculus for 5 credits. Ill have to look it up. A real boring, nasty schedule with nothing I thought Id enjoy._______________ I was always a bit envious of the people who were driven to school by their parents and/or those who brought a U-Haul full of stuff with them. On the other hand I was having the experience of being in a far-away place and most of them were not! ____________ I didnt meet anyone on my hall right away. I cant even recall whom I met first. In the beginning I recall going over to Parks Wright and talking to them back there. I came back with Frank, quasi-hippie and showed him my room. Somehow I ran into my old roommate, but it may not have been for a while, and he came up to my room. He was now at Connecticut-Wesleyan. I had no idea what it was. I never heard of it until he mentioned it. I thought it was some sort of Catholic College. He bragged how his private room was so much bigger than mine,,,,, __________ Somehow I wound up hanging for a week or so with some weird guys from another floor at Briscoe and even eating with them at their table with some weird girls. But they were too snotty and obnoxious. I also learned at Parks-Wright that Bill T. and Steve Z. from NYC had transferred over to McNutt right next to Briscoe. I found them in that weird dungeon dorm with the thin claustrophobic maze hallways on the bottom floor. They were right around the corner from each other. Steve was still shocked that studying caused good grades. Bill had a country boy roomie who liked to really booze it. One night, Bill left a quart of rum or vodka in his desk and I snuck a drink out of it. The countryboy then swallowed about a third! Bill came back and laughed about its being gone. I then took another gulp and the country boy swigged the remaining 2/3 quart in one swallow right in front of me. Unbelievable. Bill didnt even get angry. ,, Some weird guy at McNutt was also always trying to start a fight with me with occasional sarcastic remarks but he never touched me when I told him to try so nothing ever happened. Growing up in NYC, words never got me angry, just touch,,, I recall being in their bathroom a lot for some reason. Maybe the booze,,, I also recall Bills room was always dark and the halls were always empty. And noone seemed to hang with anyone else,,, Once I went into the bathroom in Briscoe and it overflowed and I ran out and down the hall with noone seeing me. I still did not know anyone on my hall yet. At Parks I met everyone the first couple of days and everyone did well with girls. At Briscoe I met noone so far and noone ever really bothered with girls. At McNutt they didnt seem to like either girls or each other..... Either before I met the Tenth Floor guys at all or before I really got to know them I walked over to the FOSTER QUAD complex to be at the outdoor dance they were having on a warm night behind one of the bldgs. I was on the steps scoping out who was there and there was one attractive girl who seemed to be alone and i was debating asking her to dance. Luckily, before I did anything I learned that she was the girlfriend of one of the band members. In those days every dance started out with the long version of LIGHT MY FIRE and also ended with the same song which also appeared in the middle. Of course, BROWN EYED GIRL was also always played more than once as well. It would be easy to look the day up if I had the 9/68 microfilm. I recall I stood there for a long time wondering about that girl below as something did not seem quite right- and it wasnt. ________ The following is a VERY early memory and I dont know if it happened with the 11th floor guys I met first or the tenth floor guys I met later. We got gooey, sticky FIGS for dessert one night and I had my spoon in the tall necked glass in which they came. I TOTALLY ACCIDENTALLY hit the handle of the spoon with my elbow and a fig went flying upwards at the ceiling! I then did one deliberately and it STUCK. Then everyone started doing it and they were stuck all over the ceiling. But I recall someone else got caught and blamed for it- just like what happened on my last dat at Long Island City High School in June 1965 with the lock-banging,,, ..... _____ I dont know who I first met at Briscoe but I do recall that I was standing outside the lounge and there were a bunch of guys inside betting one guy that he couldnt memorize a bunch of Chinese characters but he did. Turned out he had a great memory and he was studying to be a Nuclear Physicist and a Freshman. I went out of my way to meet him but dont recall the moment I did although Ken became one of the best friends I ever had later on. Turned out later that he knew a bunch of people because he came to Iu from South Bend with a few other guys he knew from there. They lived on either side of the big lounge entrance during that semester.,,,, Followed the Mets and Jets and vaguely the Rangers and Knicks ,,,,, I met Val by insulting him and getting him angry. I was in his room which was located where the privates hall ran into the regular hall. I was across the room by the window and he was lying on his back strumming his guitar (He played CLASSICAL GAS every day that semester) on his bed by the door. I insulted him, he threatened me, and everything blew over and we became great friends for many years after that. He was one of IUs shot-putters but wanted to be a Geophysicist and not a dumb jock. ,,,,, Sometime around the time I was meeting everyone I left my door open like in Parks House to go talk to one of them near the lounge and when I returned my pillow was gone. I then spent that semester with my pillowcase filled with clothes to sleep on.,,, To phone home we still couldnt do it from our rooms so Id go to the first floor, get out of the elevator and turn right. Built into the wall were a row of phonebooths. I'd phone home every Sunday night collect. One parent would stay on the kitchen phone and they other would go upstairs to their bedroom phone,,,, I noted the great view I had from my window but that I wasnt on the top floor after all. It was 11 stories tall, not 10. And I think the guys I first made friends with were from 11. But one could see to the western horizon from my room. Something I sure could never do in NYC or York. Below was a huge parking lot that went for blocks that didnt fill up until football games at the stadium to the right-front below. To the left-front was the campus and the smokestacks of the physical plant. The smoke would come right at my window many nights. One couldnt see much of the campus behind it though as the ground dipped suddenly behind it. There were the Monon tracks right along the top of that rill. To look straight out though was to the southeast where the twisters would try to reach from the clouds to the ground. And there were trees all the way to the horizon covering most of the city which was in that direction. Beyond the parking lot and between front and right-front were many old trailers right across from the lot for married couples that were there from before Eigenmann was built. I dont know if Eigenmann was finished yet. Beyond the trailers was a no-mans land: a weird area where all the houses had been torn down for some reason and overgrown by foliage. Beyond it was the northernmost part of Bloomington where the trains went over Walnut and College Avenues.________ In the beginning, before I knew anyone, I would eat alone in the lunchroom. And for quite a while I walked to my classes via Fee Lane which was the main avenue to all the dorms. I'd go with the crowd of other college teenagers in Sept 1968 down Fee Lane and under the MONON railroad bridge which always had 'LIONEL' painted on it. In the newspaper some RR exec was asked about it and he was actually angry! But that was the first 'graffiti' that was in paint that I think I ever saw and it was there for years and I walked under it many times. But at some point, I started going to the main campus with someone else and I was shown the back way along the parking lot and then through it diagonally, OVER the tracks, down the steep hill, around the Geology Bldg to the right, along the right/west side of the fenced field and straight down to the Student Union Bldg. Then thru it and out the back. I rarely went down Fee Lane any more after that. It was a real 'loners' walk but detracted from the college experience. ________ I now had my Terry Cloth bathrobe and my (cheap version) toiletry carrier. In the 'lunch line' quite often I recall there was talk about Denny McLain going for 30 wins. The last was in 1934 by Dizzy Dean and 34 years was eternity to 18 year olds. 1968+34= 2002! I know I certainly had been following it all year and still thought of it daily as I thought of it being Mickey Mantles probable last year. ,,,, I was in the IU BOOKSTORE a lot in Fall 1968 and all I saw was Dune, Dune, Dune; the sci-fi book all that semester. It read boringly to me. I didnt consider it to be real sci-fi and it worried me how idiots who were too stupid to understand sci-fi were now starting to take it over to push their propaganda. ,,,Someone pinned some bloody frogs legs from a Bio class on the Bulletin Board in 9/68,,, I think I brought back a box of those Knickerbocker Jelly Candies to IU,,,, I had actually started eating in the lunchroom nearer Briscoe North when I first returned as that was where the 11th floor people I was hanging with went. I recall speaking to them there,,, Over the years I ate on that side whenever I got back too late for my side and if I wanted to be left alone.,,, I recall sitting in the back of the lunchroom under Briscoe B all alone and constantly filling out forms for the boxes that Greyhound lost on me. I finally wrote them a letter (I vividly recall sitting at the lunch table writing it) and I finally got what was then the maximum which I believe was $50. That would have translated into $350 today but I still much more wanted all the Freshman souvenirs they lost. Wait all my life to go to college and they lose all my souvenirs of finally making it!!!..... I still sat at Swain Circle's bench below the Swain Library,,, ((((1-11-2000: I lost my cards and notes during the long vacation. These may be redundant)))): Tom Seaver was the new young Mets Rookie of the Year and was supposed to do great in 1968. A year too early,,, Someone took a bath in the mens bathroom/shower room. There was a bathtub in a special room by the sinks but it was never used for anything but chilling illegal beer,,,, The high bldg on such a flat plain and the rugged halls caused electrical shocks when one touched the doorknobs so we always touched the doorknobs with our keys first. You'd see everyone who came off the elevator walking with their key out,,, notices were taped in the elevators. political or dances or selling something,,,, Rick M had an X-acto set and made false IDs for the other guys,,,, I was always wearing buckled loafers,,,, Harry offered me Gefilte fish once but I had an allergy to fish from 1964 to 1975,,, _______ PEOPLE I KNEW::::: ___________:::::Val: Big shotputter team guy, in Geophysics, very studious, used to go away from hall to get studying done and then return after work done to have fun, very intelligent but not quite at Ken's level, newspaper called him the gentle giant, very decent and kind, looking for one woman to marry, did not like 60s promiscuity, naturally women were unkind to him as they were to all decent guys, didnt know how to spit- I had to teach him, problems with life and career and other people about the same as my own, working class family in suburbs of Indianapolis, between lower middle-class and middle class, I was at his house, even wittier than Ken which is saying a hell of a lot,,,,, Ken: 'little hairy guy', smartest person I ever met, photographic memory of some type, extremely high IQ, pulled 4.0s in Physics by barely reading the texts, very decent like Val, also just not into promiscuity, wrestler, also same problems with life and people that Val and I had, working class family in South Bend, lower middle class, I was at his tiny house, very witty,,,, Bob: rich kid from Indianapolis, good-hearted, not snobby, studied like a madman as wanted to earn soething his parents couldnt just buy for him, studied from when got up in early morning until went to bed at night- only allowed himself a few minutes to eat, never saw anyone that studious before or since, above average IQ but he thought he was less smart than he was, not really athletic but more so than I was, just wanted one woman to love and marry- same as Val and Ken and me, definitely not promiscuous,,,,, THESE three were my inner circle although I rarely saw Bob. Others on floor: Bucky (John): came with Ken from South Bend, decent and kind but a bit annoyingly weird, skiiny, tall, also not promiscuous, also wanted just a wife, got emotional crushes on girls, had high grades until last year at IU when a woman ruined him, more into toys and games than the rest of us, also above average IQ, a bit athletic: not as much as Val and Ken but more than Bob and me, he was in the 'outer ring' with Bob, went his own way a lot,,,,, Rick: another rich kid, lived a few doors down singles hall from me, his father owned the Evansville Shop center where the Santa was decapiatated while I was at York High, he was always decent and kind and definitely not snobby although he had a Corvette and a waterbed and a houseboat, troubled, I think he turned out to be gay, not athletic that I knew of, above average intelligence, got along with Val best- Val was kinder than I was by far,,,,,, John M: tall gawky guy, like hillbilly type in his mannerisms but not stupid, just didnt give a damn, not athletic that I know of, into constant pranks, monkey juice etc.,,,,, Fred: nice decent guy but seemed weird as hell, comic book collages on walls, loved Spiderman, wore Playboy bunny buttons on suit jacket, zillions of can tabs, in TV/Radio,,,,, Harry: Little Jewish guy who was Val's roomie in 68, above average IQ, nice to me and others, didnt know very well,,,,,, TO BE ADDED TO,,,,,,________ ______________ ___________ Sept 1969 music that dominated the hall: people got to be free, LIGHT MY FIRE-jose feliciano version AWFUL!, SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE, BORN TO BE WILD, harper valley pta BAD, but barb eden was cute, hush, hello i love you, CLASSICAL GAS, fool on the hill-brasil 66 version, girl watcher, hey jude AWFUL, tiny tim was around,

Someone put coldcuts behind his butt once and it made a stain thru it. Someone also put coldcuts once in the radiator right before they closed it for the weekend, as they always did, and then the lounge stunk when it was reopened. Once someone tried to push the locked lounge door via its rectangular window and put his hand thru it. He went to the Health Center and the floor fund had to pay for it. There were 'mandatory' monthly floor meetings in the lounge. Our lounge faced the girls tenth floor lounge and sometimes either side would give 'free shows' to the other,,In the lounge were some couches, tables, chairs, lamps, waste basket, a refrigerator and a sink.________. BATHROOM: Had a row of sinks across from the door, urinals to the left of the door, stalls past the urinals, a bathtub room across from the stalls and next to the sinks, a long mirror over the sinks, a separate room of shower stalls beyond the toilets. Each shower was very private with two little rooms, the first had facing built-in metal benches to undress and hooks, the second was for the shower itself. (The 1972 world record shower was made in a Briscoe shower stall). On the other side of the 'hall' was a mirror-image bathroom like ours. _______ IRONING ROOM: Just off the singles hall, almost across from my room but a short way to the right, was the ironing room which was using its use as more people turned to perma-press. I used it in September but thats about it. I mostly wore perma-press or covered up with a 'vest'. Someone also brought in a stationary bike but I dont know if that was in 68 or 70,,,,,, _________ HALL CLOSETS: On the other side of our singles rooms were a row of closets for the maids and janitors in those days when college was 'elite'. Theyd store their stuff in there including their carts. They were sealed in the 90s and the kids were shocked at what they had been in the 60s,,, ,______ DRINKING FOUNTAIN: Was also on my privates hall. Also down to the right from me and across. ________ MAIN HALLS: Starting form the lounge. When one left the lounge one went into the two elevators. Between them was a glass mailchute. (Years later it was metal due to vandalization. Then they closed it completely.) To either side of the lounge entrance were tall mirrors so one could see down the halls from the elevator and vice-versa. In front of them were trash cans. The two main halls formed a 'V' with the point at the lounge doors. To the right was 'my' hall where most of my friends were. The rooms up to the crossing singles hall were all on the right. On the left was nothing but the entrance halfway down to the bathroom. And the door to the trash chute down ten stories was just past the bathroom entrance. Jim Ms room was right across from the bathroom. Vals was right across from the end of the singles hall. The fire alarm was way up where the main hall bent around to the privates hall. After that were double rooms on BOTH sides of the hall until one reached the big metal fire door at the end. On the right at the end was the singles room for the Resident Assistant or a big private for a student. Beyond the fire door was the stairwell. On the left from the lounge was first the Bulletin Board on the left wall. Then a bit down was, I believe, a small study room that one could barely squeeze into but it had a chair and permanent dexk with pipes behind. (I THINK it was down this hall, it may have been down the other). On this side the double rooms were all on the left until the thin privates hall crossed. On the right was just the entrance to their bathroom. Beyond the singles hall were double rooms on both sides until the very end which had a private on the left to balance the one on the other hall. Then came their stairwell. _________ This was when I really started hearing all this AGE OF AQUARIUS stuff, not in 1967,,,, And more of that GURU stuff,,,, I was ever worse the worrier and my stomach was killing me at times. I now had a whole list of things not to eat including catchup!. I was supposed to be on day-old bread and poached eggs. In a dorm! Every meal I had to go up to my room and take GELUSIL one hour later for my stomach. I had the liquid and the chew-tablets. Chalk-water! I called it. Worry about money. Worry about my career. Worry about having a family some day. Worry about "working up to my so-called great potential". Everybody everywhere always expected me to be smarter, better, more decent, more successful than everybody else it seemed to me,,,, After supper I still went to my closet and had a swig of Blackberry Brandy in a snifter every day. And at night I'd put on my Chinese lounging pajamas and have one while I studied before bed. Playing the pre-loans college role,,,, We had all-night 'bull' sessions because the group of us all seemed to have the same emotional (and often financial and achievement problems) that other males didnt seem to have. We were ALL brought up to be DECENT and to be ACHIEVERS while most males were just into degeneracy it seemed to us. So we all found each other to talk to FINALLY after 18 years of feeling alone. Bob once said it was unbelievable how a bunch of guys like us could never even find ONE guy to talk to and we all wound up on the same side of the same hall together,,,, The LITTLE RED BOOK OF CHAIRMAN MAO was being sold at the BOOKNOOK at the campus entrance. Quite popular. There was also MISTER BOSTONS Red Book of drink mixing which I bought. Both came in thick red plastic cases,,,, Decorating the walls and ceilings was big, especially with nets across the ceiling and things insdie the nets AND fabrics hanging on the wall that looked like tiger/leopard/cheetah skins, I think they came from the Fabric shop torn down in 69 for the new huge city library,,,, On the lunchline people were always trying to get signatures on various petitions,,,, I had ONE decoration: a poster of Einstein over my bed (I always had gold blankets and Val once teased me about always wearing white shirts with the sleeves rolled up),,,, Way down in the basement when one got off the elevator there was the vending machine room to the front right (Sealed off in 1990s) and directly to the right was a short hall to first the 'ironing/folding' room which had one or two long tables and piles of newspapers. Half way thru it to the right was the entrance to the washers and dryers. Four rows of them and still not enough on Sunday nights. (They were still there in the 90s). Id just bring my laundry down every Sunday night, put it in the washer, stop at the vending machines, and come back down later to put them in the dryer(s),,,,, Briscoe had a library. It was in the central bldg and up the fancy stairs and around. Desks were up there along the windows to study. Front desk to the right. Used to be decorated for the holidays of the 60s/70s.,,,,, Swain West had a LIBRARY. Desk to left while coming in. Short along entrance but long to the left. (Now there is one tiny one to the right). No 'detectors' then. (Now have). Desks were to front and right. I could sit at a window to the front right from the door and look out and down at the little driveway circle with the bench just below and a bit to the left. (Library extension of early 70s over circle). Jeez it was hot in there as the air conditioner was often out. Think there were also books along wall to the right. (Then they added the long extension on the left around 1971 and then they put in a lower floor in the 1980s),,,, Still watched out for Stonies/Cutters,,,, Martinsville still considered dangerous,,,, Louisville had the green topped newspaper around. They were the next big city south,,,, (Green)baggers perhaps at their height. Anti-war people in greenish coats with their books in green laundry bags over their shoulders,,,, LBJs "Great Society" was supposedly still on but coming to an end. Vietnam screwed it up,,, Nixon was running against Humphrey and Wallace and HHH was catching up day after day after NIXON had a huge lead in the beginning,,,, Foreign students had their own place on Jordan Avenue in front of Read Hall but I never really saw anything going on around there,,,, 'Baggers' always trying to get ROTC off campus,,,,, Draft still going big. Would hit height in 1969 due to delayed reaction of LBJ cut-backs,,,, Lots of Briscoe guys had bookshelves made of cinder blocks due to new library being made across from Wright Quad where little houses and parking lot were,,,, No one rode bikes. They were for kids, only,,,, Army jackets came from Army/navy store a block west of College Ave on Morton (still there in 1990s),,,,, Guys from Briscoe and McNutt (see campus map)guys would yell obscenities at each other through the windows. Usually starting with "McNutt sucks!". I was once yelling back and forth with my light off and later Val came up and said it was obvious which window it was coming from as all the other windows were lit but mine and he saw it while coming up from the Geology Bldg in the dark the back way alone thru the parking lots,,, The floor Resident Asst never bothered us,,, new shoes were a pain in the feet for me. I recall that when Id get new leather ones Id have to put in those pads to lift up my heels so the sides wouldnt cut my ankles and Id actually walk across the parking lot to school in my stocking feet carrying my new shoes until I could break them in. In the 60s one could do things like that without getting started at,,, For some reason the 5pm bells would really depress me as would the late afternoon before supper and sundown. Magnified my depressions and worrying. Perhaps had something to do with Indiana flat sundowns. In NYC I never saw an actual sundown on land due to all the bldgs. And in York there are so many hills. So maybe Midwestern sundowns are more extreme. But I recall that every time I left Swain West thru the back door into the woods and then trudged thru Swain Woods under the clock tower chimes and across the then-almost completely deserted campus it was a VERY long, depressing walk for no reason as it was the same walk I liked to take anytime from 730pm to 3pm or whatever,,, FRIDAYS: When not dating I would stay in the lunchroom alone every Friday after supper and sip coffee alone in the back while watching the dreary sun go down. I dont even recall redaing or writing, just sitting and thinking/brooding/worrying. Then Id go upstairs to my floor and kid around with the guys. Then Id walk to the mall. Almost always the same way. Down out the FRONT door, unlike all week when I went out the back, south on Fee Lane under the RR bridge. Left on tenth. They must have been building the NEW library then but I dont even recall it. Then past Jordan and past Wright Quad. Past Teter. To Crosstown Pharmacy and perhaps in. Then to next street where Eigenmann was also being built. South on that street all the way to THIRD STREET where Forest Quad was (Jane Pauley lived there in 1968). Across to the corner where St Charles Church was (The sidewalk was still the old one that was below the street which was a lane less. Along tenth with the cars above and the blocks of field with two churches to my right. To the diagonal driveway of the Protestant church at the end. Along the driveway to the small street. Across to Eastland Shopping Center and always right into the HOOKS Drugstore, which was the first store there. Into the other Shop Center stores and then to the end of the sidewalk of the Shop Center. Then came a long, long field, often muddy, with a path less than a foot wide to walk all the way to the College Mall Road. Then across it and onto the mall parking lot. In the mall the gift shop I liked was right inside to the right. (See mall page somewhere). I often got another coffee at the SEARS snack bar as their refills were 5c,,,,, 1-12-00: I rarely ate breakfast at all as we all usually stayed up too late. And if we did it was usually alone as we only did it if we individually had to get up early,,,, There was a bulletin board on the inside of my door, a long rectangular one I believe. I only had a few things on it.,,,, never heard any planes overhead. The ones from Indianapolis to Louisville were too high up and could barely be seen,,,,, I dont recall ever walking up Walnut Street from town. I considered it to be no-mans land (stony territory) between the Burger Chef on 7th/Walnut and the Greyhound at 10th/Walnut. It wasnt until Dec 1994 that I actually walked from a point in-between those two places and east to campus. I was shocked to find an old school in there which was now being used as something else. Back then in those fewer student/ tough to live off campus days, there were 'stonies' in there. I never knew 7th,8th, or 9th Street to the campus those 5? blocks,,,,, Val did some great graffiti. My favorite was one on a Swain Lirarry old wooden desk which said, "Try to erase THIS you f---ing janitors",,,,, I THINK it was 1968 when Tang and Screaming Yellow Zonkers first came out and it was Rick M. who introduced me to them,,,,, A few ascots could be seen in late 68 but they were mainly 1969. A remnant of 'Mod'??,,,,, Smoking everywhere was okay then. We had thick glass ashtrays in our rooms when we signed in,,,, I think it was 1968 when a guy on my floor got drated right out of college. He lived in one of the doubles on Vals/Kens side. I recall being in his room when he was selling everything he had. I bought a plastic cup holder that was popular then. You popped a plastic dixie cup into it. I still have it somewhere,,,,, This may have been when the number of anti-war 'green'baggers were at their height,,,,, _______ ___________ SEPTEMBER 1, 1968: McLain now 27-5,,, _____FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 1968: McLain now 28-5,,, _____SEPTEMBER 10, 1968: McLain now 29-5,,, ______SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14, 1968: Denny McLain wins 30th game!!! I recall watching this with Ken and others and saw Al Kaline run out of the dugout to congratulate him. And then there was an old guy on TV whom I KNEW as I had seen him on tv and in photos so many times but my mind went BLANK for some embarrassing reason. Then someone asks, "Who's that? Walt" and I had to answer, "I dont know" as I could not, for the life of me, remember. But it was DIZZY DEAN of course! He was the last to win it in 1934. I followed McLain daily and now I wanted to see if he could win 35! But after winning 30 he collapsed and only won one more and I had to watch his new records for 'percentage' crumble away.,,, On this same day Jimmy Ellis, WBA Heavyweight Champ 'beat' 33 year old Floyd Patterson on a decision and was booed by the crowd,,, ___ NOW HERE IS A PUZZLE: I 'recall' hanging around with the 11th floor guys for a while before making friends with the 10th floor guys where I now lived. Yet I recall THIS day very well and they all knew me very well and I knew them very well and in those days the semester didnt even start until sometime in SEPTEMBER. KALINE IN A SERIES AT LAST!!,, Salerno and Valentine petition Commissioner Eckert for re-instatement. Two umps trying to form a union. Dismissed by AL pres CRONIN 9/16,,, ______ SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 29,1968: BASEBALL SEASON ENDS. I dont recall when I got my 1967 Strat O Matic cards. Probably in the Summer or Sept 68. They were the second 'cleanest, brightest' of the cards they ever sent out (1966 were the best) but the 1967 were the most fun ones to ever play. I was still always trying to break all the codes so I could make my own. But it was impossible to get all the old time stats anyway. 1-24-00.

Instead it plummetted DOWN to the basement and crashed there. I guess the emergency brakes need more than one floor to work. GENERAL FALL SEMESTER 1968 AT BRISCOE

GENERAL FALL SEMESTER 1968 AT BRISCOE:---:: This one contains POSSIBLE Oct 1968, PROBABLE Oct 1968, and DEFINITE Oct 1968 as well as stuff that could have happened any time::: here is a very odd thing I remember. It was either early Oct or late Sept. I think I had just barely known the Tenth Floor guys. We had to go to the basement of the CENTER BUILDING down those curved steps and stand there on the gym-like floor all packed together like sardines for some reason. I recall I knew someone or more than one who was down there standing with me. I recall where I stood: right in the middle, about 1/4 back from the steps and slightly to the left looking at the steps. I dont know if it was a nuclear shelter drill or a tornado drill or what but I never did it again.,,,,, We had the FLOOR MEETINGS in the lounge. I rarely went to them. I think Bob may have been floor sect once and then Floor Pres perhaps in 1970 or whatever. Couple dozen 18,19,20,21 year old males raising hell trying to have a meeting,,,, I often heard of LUMS which was, it sounded like, a fancy tavern that had 'beer soaked hotdogs' that were supposed to be some sort of fancy thing. It was on North Walnut St all by itself just before reaching the overhead RR bridge. It was where anyone who was anyone went it seemd, including all the fancy frat guys and big jocks. (I didnt finally get to it until 1971 or later. It turned out to be very unfancy inside: just booths around the walls of a big floor and sort of like a roomier A&W complete with big windows to look out- its parking lot was off to the side so one couldnt look in while going past. Its been many things since then. A big one-story plain glass bldg 90* from N.Walnut with a big parking lot.),,,, Can tabs! were everywhere this Fall 1968 Semester, just like the new Frisbees. Over the Summer they took out all the new soda cup machines and replaced them with canned soda machines like they had at the NY Worlds Fair of 1964. Lots of guys made all sorts of things out of attaching the ring tabs together. The early tabs all had NO rings to pull and just little 'tongues' to cut ones fingers. Now they invented ring ones. Instead of a tongue on each side they had a ring and the tongue that ripped out of the can so they linked together. Fred not only had cut up lots of 1960s comic booke to cover his walls with collages, he had strung together whole curtains of tabs by raiding the waste baskets by the vending room, ,,age 18/19,,, Fall 1968,,, We discovered ESCHER about then with his weird impossible paintings, actually I noticed him before but now a LOT of his work appeared,,,,, Guys would make stink bombs out of old film (35mm, which was then only used in $160 cameras), placing them on chairs leaning against the inside of the elevator doors, and then reaching into the 'vator and pushing the button of the floor you wanted to harass. The door would open and the chair wuld fall in or the film slide onto the floor,,,, THE SPECTATOR was the anti-war newspaper. THE ALTERNATIVE was the right-wing answer to it,,,,, Contact lense were VERY expensive back then. And eyeglasses through in the frames for free,,,,, Lots of Canadian coins around. Probably due to 1967 Montreal Worlds Fair,,, age 18/19,,,, Fall 1968,,, Free Bibles would sometimes be handed out on the way to lunch,,, There was a lot of graffiti in the stalls in the mens room. I read it often. Especially while pulling an all-nighter and in there at 3am. It was STILL there in 1991!!! All of ours!!! Painted over in 1992! But great to see it again,,, A couple of shelves came out of the closets and fit just right over the arms of the big wooden chairs we all had to serve as desks,,, The Original STAR TREK was still around in Late 1968 but could only be seen in TV rooms,,, ..... 1-11-2000: The college was closed for weeks for the Holidays and I misplaced my notes. I have some on a sheet however. I'll try them but there may/will be redundancies now: No refrigs or hotplates allowed in rooms. Also couldnt make long distance calls,,,, Adam thought I'd be a big POGO fan as it was considered intellectual. But I was Scientific, not Intellectual.,,,, It was VAL who first brought me to THE OTHERSIDE which had been opened since Sept 1967. I followed him across the street from the VON LEE corner diagonally to the brownstones just west of Dunn/Kirkwood. And it was downstairs and accessible from the outside front of the bldg just like NYC brownstones. I followed him in. There was a LONG glass counter on the right with trinkets for sale inside. To the left there was row after row of clothing that 'Baggers' had embellished with everything imaginable: flairs, trinkets, little bells, lots of painted drawings, anything and everything and it mostly looked well-done. And it had the same smell of incense I recalled from the Chinese bldg of FREEDOMLAND back in the early 60s, I recall there was a guy and a girl behind the counter in full gear,, ,,,, I was in a bus or something approaching Indianapolis for some reason and I saw Nixon's campaign plane not very far away behind a fence,,,, age 18/19,,, Fall 1968,,, It had to be sometime in Oct 68 that I went to the X-rated theatre with Ken and Bucky and two other guys. Who had the car is beyond me. Those were the days when I didnt regularly wear my glasses as I really only needed them if I was in the back of a classroom and some prof wrote small. So Im in the back seat with Ken and we have a cooler back there with us full of beer on the floor. Im on the left facing forward and I cant see the screen. If I SQUINT real hard I can. I didnt even know hwere we were in those days. But I looked it up since and it was way west of town over what is now the highway. So Ken and i get drunker and drunker and are just kidding around in the back seat as 99% of such 'x' movies were all talk anyway and no one removed any clothes until the last couple of minutes. But I DO recall that one had a strip poker game,, 1-19-00 ,,, I was looking out the window at McNutt in daylight and I saw a cop approach their back door. And right when he got there someone leaned out the window right over the door and poured a bucket of water on his head!!!,,,,, Swain elevator so slow it was unbelievable,,,,, Indiana still had to change its clocks in October 1968 as it was on Central Time,,,,, The Education bldg was known for its beautiful airhead girls,,,,, Fred wore his sports jacket to a floor meeting and asked, "How do I look, guys?" (He always said, 'guys'). Everyone praised him but Ken who, from the back, yelled, "You look like sh-t", Fred.",,,,, I was always warned to sniff milk before drinking it. I always did. Just like I was warned to look in glasses first (see Greenpoint). But ONE time I did not. I went down to the basement vending machine room, bought a container of milk, swigged it and instantly spat it out AUTOMATICALLY without even thinking. It was an instant reaction. All over the vending machine. It was sour.,,,,, October music that dominated hall: you keep me hanging on, ive got to get a message to you, those were the days, midnight confessions, plus september leftovers,,,,, Whenever I cam back from classes in the afternoon Id check my mailbox in the center bldg. It was there with hundreds of them. Metal with a small window and just a few inches below eye level so id have to bend a bit. I also checked it at lunchtime as they had two deliveries a day but both, I believe, came after noon. Back in the 50s two a day was normal everywhere. By 1968 it was rare,,,,, Once I went into the mens room and there was an incredibly vile smell that I recognized. There was a bunch of green stomach bile in the sink. I knew it from my ulcer. Its a weird smell, not stinking but like alien. Like ammonia is alien but not smelling like ammonia. I dont know who was that sick,,,, I recall all-nighters well. I would do them in my room and move to the lounge when bored. I was in the first stall a lot as the lack of sleep and my ulcer made me feel like I had to go to the bathroom. I read the graffiti on the stalls right side and added my own. It was all still there in 1991. I took showers to keep myself awake. I could no longer take No-Doz. I was really worrying and afraid then. My mind was never what it was before all the crap I took from Feb 1959-Summer 1964 yet I was expected to perform at that rate and 'somehow' get tons of money from somewhere to go to college. I usually conked out before sunrise and took a nap. I was sweaty and tired despite the shower. But, jeez, I could learn a whole half-semester of work in one night when I was scared like that. The attention span I had from before Kindergarten to 1959 and that was beaten out of me from 1959 to 1964 would come back for short periods when I was backed into a corner like that and I'd catch up all at once. Then id wonder why my mind wouldnt work until the next major exam. The Mid-Term Exams of late October 1968 were especially bad. And on my 19th Birthday, October 30,1968 I had my two worst ON my birthday. One, Irecall was very early in the morning and the other was very late at night. So my whole birthday was ruined. I forget if GERMAN was early in the AM and PHYSICS was late at night or vice versa but it was horrible. I recall being in an increasingly bad Black Depression while walking home alone at night past the big coal pile of the Physical Plant on Fee Lane just at the overhead railroad bridge where I picked up a piece of coal as my only 'birthday present'. Then I sat on my bed thinking how I was now 19 and before Id know it Id be 20, then 30 and I saw no way to do what everyone expected me to do all at once: come up with a fortune for college out of state tuition, get my battered out attention span back, get the money to get a car and wife and kids and have a 'normal' life. Christ I was depressed that night. But it was all true. It ALL collapsed in the end despite struggling uphill. And my entire ego was based on making it in a subject so damned difficult with no money and a damaged mind from 2/59-8/64. Now that Im older its good that I didnt realize that my parents were moving from NYC to York for good at that time as well and all my belongings were being stolen and my parents would give up their FINALLY decent-paying jobs for minimum wage jobs and we'd all be REALLY broke again. That knowledge would have been MORE than enough to be suicidal during that already close-to-it black Depression.1-13-00. ,,,,,, Was RAMPARTS mag still around?,,, I discovered that when walking behind the GEOLOGY BLDG up the steep hill towards the tracks that there was often a RAINBOW off to the East above the parking lot. I looked for it then every time I went back thru there thru 1973. Now they say they will build a parking garage there,,,, At night, on nights without a breeze, the smoke from the Power Plant (Physical Plant) would come right at my window,,,, Like many I worried a lot about the draft. On the one hand I couldnt really afford to keep taking full course loads because of the huge out of state fees. But if I didnt Id be drafted. They didnt care that you hadnt enough money or that you majored in difficult classes wherin one of yours was tougher than three normal ones. Off you went to Vietnam. Worry.Worry,,, I was looking for Ken one night and was told he was in a little study room I didnt know existed. It was built into the inside of the hall that held the bathrooms and it looked like a janitors closet door. But I knocked and he opened it and there he was at a tiny built-in desk top with a chair and pipes along the right front of his desk. On the big pipe he drew one of the most hilariously disgusting things I had ever seen and it looke dlike he put a lot of time into it. I broke down laughing at his wit, however crude, and his elaboration. He was like a twisted little genius gnome in there,,,,, That McDonalds that was way up north that I may never have walked to must have been one of the original drive-in ones. Tiny. And there were no BIG MACS then. Just the little burgers. Theyd copy Big Macs from Big Boys in 1969,,,, ((( 1-14-2000: Today Im working on yahoomaps page- see below))) 1-19-00: The NOV 16,1968 had to be the one where Ken and I got trapped in the elevator.,,, It may have been Oct 1968 when I got Val of Briscoe to phone Steve Z. of ParksWright, now in McNutt to play a joke on him by pretending to be Ahluwalia. He called him with a phony India accent and asked for Steve Z----. Steve answered, "Steve McG----, I changed my name." Val and I didnt know what he was talking about and thought he was kidding. Val asked me after the call what he meant and I said I didnt know. But Val said, "Steve McG---, Vell, Vell. Thees is Ahluwalia. I teach you Calculus. You remember me? " Steve said it was some other math course. Then Val got into a great conversation with Steve and had Steve completely fooled as Steve had no idea it was I or that anyone on our hall would remember Ahluwalias name. Then Val pulled the joke at the end. He says, "You see, my wife- she piece of s---. I want to put my brown bearded mouth aroind your pale white ----- and blow on it. Toot! Ees that all right??" Steve answered, "F---!" Very quietly and hung up. I got him back for the girl on the phone thing a year earlier!,, 1-20-2000,,, I believe it was Harry S. who was going from door to door trying to get guys to put his big letters in their windows for the football game coming up. Crowds going to the game would either have to walk past the windows or park their cars in the lot below. I wonder if it was the Homecoming Game for it to be so important? That would make it in late October in those days (Now Homecoming is in Early October),,, age 18/19,,, 1-24-00,,, Sometimes we'd get overnight guests from the other Big Ten school who drove down and were looking for a place to crash. So if anyone had an unused bed in his room he'd let the guy, a total stranger, sleep in it and the next morning anyone who wasnt going to use his lunch ticket would lend it to the guy to eat for free. Even though it was a rival school,,,, Interest in SPACE and money for Space had been going down since Glenn orbited the Earth in 1962. That did not bode well for my future,,, When I tried to rest in my room a lot of worries would hit me and I just had to get out and walk. For some reason constant walking fast made my worrying secondary even though it was still there. When I sat in my room worry became reality. When I went anywhere at all, the walk became reality and I was out in reality and the things I worried about didnt seem as real. But noone ever told me how to do all the things I was expected to do, success wise (pay for out of state college costs, beat everyone else for a rare difficult degree) , PLUS do all the 'normal' things I was supposed to do (Buy a car, find a wife, afford kids) when one was mutually exclusive from the other. Money came from having a good paying full time job and I was in college where I was in classes instaed of working,,,1=29-00,,,
