Warning: The John of this story is NOT John Doggett Summary: While investigating the disappearance of a teacher, Mulder and Scully learn more about their new powers. Mulder woke. He could feel the presence of others like him. Even their presence made his head pound. He was lying on a medical bed. A man, who was about the same age as the woman came up to him. Out loud he said. "He's in a worse way then we first thought," "Can he be cured?" Elizabeth asked. For the first time, the man looked at Mulder. He recognized this man from the background checks he had completed. This was Elizabeth's husband John. "Mulder, you have an implant in your mind. It's malfunctioning, that's why you feel pain." "An implant? Who gave it to me?" "Now is not the time to worry about that." "I have a right to know." John and Elizabeth exchanged hesitant glances. Finally John spoke. "There is an international government conspiracy. The conspiracy is hunting Tomorrow People. When they are found, their minds are erased, and an implant is placed in their minds." "I know it sounds insane that there is an international conspiracy, but it's true." Elizabeth insisted. "You wouldn't believe how much I know about international conspiracies." Mulder looked around the room. "Have you ever read the Lone Gunmen?" "I have some knowledge of them, yes." John said. "Do you know why you have the implant?" Elizabeth asked. "It's to keep me from being a telepath,' he told the woman as a stab of pain went through him. "The only way we can stop the pain is to remove the implant, will you let us do that?" for the first time, Mulder realized the man also was British. "What happens if you don't remove it?" "Eventually, you'll die, after going through a much more pain then your feeling now." He didn't trust these people, but to be rid of the pain.... "Do it," he finally said. ******************** *Wake up Mulder. * The voice of Dana Scully whispered in his mind. Mulder's eyes blinked open. He was lying in a hospital bed. His arms ached. He glanced down at them. Scars peppered his arms, both the red of new scars and white of older scars. "What happened to me?" "You don't remember?" There was hesitancy in Scully's voice. Mulder couldn't help but notice that Scully was wearing a large, bulky coat. "Not a damn thing." He admitted. "The last thing I remember was going to Oregon with Skinner." "Perhaps it's for the best." "How much time did I loose?" "It's December 23." "Two days before Christmas." Mulder murmured. "I haven't gotten you a present. I promised you a big diamond." There were tears in Scully's eyes. "Do you remember that?" "How could I forget?" He looked her over. Scully hadn't even bothered to take off her coat. "I'm sorry, you must have gotten on with your life. Why don't you go onto where ever you're going to?" "I just had to make sure. Make sure that you could remember us." A tear rolled down her cheek. "I was so afraid that you would be like me. That you wouldn't remember." "I can remember everything. The first time we made love in the shower. When we made love on that kitchen floor. The time we ran off to St. Stephan Island and got married." He smiled. "I can even remember a love making session in a sink. Is that good enough for you?" "Then I have a Holiday present for you. I found out about it the day you disappeared." Scully took off her coat. For the first time, Mulder realized that Scully was pregnant. *This is the best present you could have ever given me. * Tears poured down his face. Scully had always wanted to become pregnant. He reached his hand out, touching her hand. Scully took his hand, and placed it on her stomach. He could feel the baby's life beneath his hand. Then he could feel another presence, another baby. *You're having twins! * *This is your daddy. * Mulder could hear Scully telepathically tell the twins. *He's back with us. We're no longer alone. * Mulder could feel the babies move beneath his hand. They understood Scully. "How?" "We're Tomorrow People. All ready, our twins are empathetic. When they are teens, they'll break out." Mulder closed his eyes. He tried to telepath his feelings of love for these babies. They moved happily as he did. "Miracle babies." ********************* Mulder opened his eyes. "Scully!" "She's not here. You were dreaming." Liz was standing beside his bed. "She was with me." Mulder insisted. "She's expecting." "Tell me, when did this dream take place?" Liz asked. "The date was December 23, 2000." "When you where with us before you had dreams of the future. They were very accurate." Elizabeth explained. "It seems like that talent came back." "Then what I saw?" "Will happen in the future." Mulder couldn't help but smile. "I get Scully back. We expect twins." "How do you feel?" Mulder thought for a moment. For the first time, he realized that the pain was gone. "I feel better." "How's the headache?" "Totally gone." "The Lone Gunmen have told me about your work in the X-Files. You have worked against an international conspiracy that is working with Aliens for the eventual colonization of the planet Earth." Mulder made a mental note never to trust his friends again. "Why would they tell you about that?" "Simple. The implantations are part of that conspiracy. The aliens see us as a threat." Elizabeth paused. "We are on the same side Mulder. We have the same enemy." "There is no longer a consortium." "Perhaps, but there are others that have taken over the implantation institutes." "Wonderful, just wonderful." "Can you remember what happened the summer of your sixteenth year?" Mulder thought, but there was nothing there. "I'm sorry. I can't. I was in a car wreck. I had a fractured skull." The man came into the room. "I see our guest is awake, does your head hurt anymore?" Mulder reached up and touched his head, and for the first time realized the pain was gone, but there were also no scars. "How did you get it out of my mind?' Instead of answering, the man asked another question. "I know you work with the FBI, and that you killed. Do you remember killing anyone?" "Who are you?" "I am John, I removed your implant." he then turned to the woman. "This is my wife, Elizabeth." Something nagged at Mulder's mind. "Now that you have the implant out, are you going to kill me?" *I'm not going to kill you, * she telepathed. "Why should I believe you?" he asked out loud. *We are Tomorrow People, we can't kill. * "Tomorrow people?" "We're the future. The next stage in human development." John explained. "We are here to bring peace to the world." "Next stage in human development." Mulder repeated slowly. "Do you remember killing people?" Elizabeth asked. "Those memories are like dreams. It was as if I wasn't in control of my body." he confessed. "The people who gave you the implants where in control. They were the ones that are responsible for the murders." John told him. "I did it, it was my hands that killed." John took out the gun that Elizabeth had transported to him. He handed it to Mulder. "I want you to kill me." "John!" Elizabeth gasped. "It's all right," The man said calmly. "He can't hurt me." Mulder sat up; he aimed the gun at John. His hand began to shake, sweat poured down his face. Finally he lowered the gun. "I can't, I can't kill you." "Before today, do you think you could?" Elizabeth asked. "Yes," Mulder said without hesitation. "Mulder you are a victim, what you did under the implant's influence wasn't your fault." "What are you going to do with me?" "Do with you? You're not our prisoner!" John said. "You mean I could leave if I wanted to, right now." "Yes, you could leave, but I wouldn't recommend it." "Why not?" "For one thing, you don't know how to use your powers." "For another, what will happen once they find out that you no longer have your implant?" Elizabeth put in. "If you go out on your own, without least knowing how to block your mind it won't be long before you are caught. You do know the consortiums uses rogue telepaths?" "You can stay on your case," John told him. "You'll just have to work closer with Ami." "How close?" "You'll team teach with her, and stay with her." Mulder realized that it would be easier to get Scully back if he worked with these people. He looked up to them. "You know what my answer has to be." ************* Scully woke; she was lying on a bunk bed. Her head ached. She opened her eyes. She was in a small cell, there where two sets of bunks on each side of the cell. Byers sat on the bunk across from hers. He was watching her. "How are you doing?" "My head hurts." She looked at him. For the first time she realized that the voices were gone. "The voices..." "Somewhere in this cell is Barlium." "What's that?" "It takes away a Tomorrow person's special powers." Byers explained. "That's why the voices are gone." Scully could hear something coming down the hallway. Byers put a finger to his lip. The door to the cell opened, and the guards carried in a red headed man. They dumped him on the floor. Then the guards turned and left. The man groaned. Scully got to her feet, and knelt beside the man. The hair beside his left ear had been cut. There was a bandage covering a wound. Scully felt for a pulse. The man had one, strong. "We need to get him to a cot." Byers leapt to his feet. He helped Scully pick the man up, and put him on a cot. The man groaned again and opened his eyes. "Byers, they caught you too?" "You remember who I am?" Byers asked. "The operation, it isn't working on me. They keep taking me off to test me as to why." The man explained. He looked at Scully. "Who are you?" "This is Scully, a friend." "I could tell him that myself." Scully said. "I'm Megabyte Damon." "You have a lot of people looking for you." "Well, here I am." "Where is here?" Byers asked. "I'm not quite sure." Megabyte looked at Byers. "Ami, is Ami okay? Did they catch her?" "Ami's fine. She hasn't been harmed." Scully told him. Megabyte sighed in relief. "What about Adam? Is he all right?" Scully wondered why Megabyte was so worried about Adam. "He's fine too." "At least Ami has Adam. If something happens to me, she won't be alone." Megabyte looked around the cell. "I wish they would just kill me. Their learning too much about the Tomorrow People from me." ******************* Mulder had been sent back to work. The partition that separated his class from Ami's was now opened. They would be team teaching. At least on paper, in reality, Mulder would be acting more as an aide. Mulder felt alone, empty since Scully's disappearance. It would be for the best for them to work together. He didn't think he could do it alone. "You said that I was once a tomorrow person when I was a teen. Why can't I remember it?" Mulder asked Ami. "Your mind was erased when you where given your implant." Ami began to move desks. "It happens often." Mulder moved to help her. "Does the person ever get their memories back?" "Some do, some don't." "I wish I could remember." "John gave me something that might help you jog your memory." "What's that?" "Sit down." Ami instructed. Mulder sat down at her desk. She handed him a small disk. "John's computer TIM, records everything that happens in the headquarters. He made a short record of what it saw." "How do I use this?" Mulder asked. "Press it against your forehead, then close your eyes." Mulder did as he was told. Inside his mind, he saw a tall, gangly kid. It took Mulder several seconds to realize that this was he. "You need to tell your parents about us." A much younger John told him. "No, my father wouldn't understand." "You'd be surprised. Your father cares for you. I think he'll believe you." "How do you know that?" "I visited him." Before Mulder could say anything John said. "No, I didn't tell him about you." Another memory came, this one of Byers and Mulder trying to teach a British kid named Mike how to play basketball. Another kid named Stephen was watching them, and laughing. They had changed the control room into a basketball court, shoving furniture against the wall, installing makeshift hoops. "If you think it's so funny, why don't you try?" Mike threw the ball at Stephen. Stephen caught the ball, and threw it. It went through the hoop. Mulder opened his eyes, and took off the disk. "This thing isn't true." "Why do you say that?" *Byers, I didn't know Byers until 1989! * Adam stood in the doorway. "You two need some help?" Ami smiled at him. "I could always use some more help." Adam came into the room. "Look, Mulder. I'm sorry I was suspicious of you earlier." "It's okay." "I thought perhaps you where a rouge telepath." "You mean one that worked for the government." "Yes, there are many of them. They hunt tomorrow people." "They've found so many, that we must be wary of everyone." Ami told him. "It seems like they are going after the first few of the second wave." Adam explained. "Of the first 30, only Ami and I remain." "Of the ones you find with the implants, how many have their implants removed?" Mulder asked. "Not many want it removed." "You mean, you don't force them to remove it?" "We're not like those who give the implants!" Ami said firmly. "It's up to them whether they get the implant removed." "We give them a choice." Adam explained. "We tell them about us, and let them decide if they want the implant removed." ************************* As Mulder unpacked, he felt something, almost as if Scully was in the room with him. A moment later, the feeling was gone. The emptiness returned with full force. "I think I'm going crazy," he said. "You are?" Adam asked. He was sitting on Mulder's new bed. "I thought I felt Scully in the room." "Are you sure?" "It was very brief." "It must mean that Scully is still alive." Adam tried to smile. "There's still hope." Mulder felt hope surge through him. She was alive, for the first time in a long time he had hope. "Where she is, that's something else." "You want some coffee?" "That would be great." Adam vanished, returning a few seconds later with two cups of coffee. He handed one to Mulder. "It's probably good you moved in with Ami." "Where is here? I've been meaning to ask." "London." "Do you live here?" "No. I lived in the ship. Or at least I did until it was raided." he said, settling down on the bed. It's Ami and Megabyte that live here. They have a room down the hall. It's General Damon's house." "Megabyte's father doesn't know me, and yet he let me have a room in his house." Mulder said. "When can I meet him?" "Might be a while," he glanced at Mulder. "Do you want the truth, or some lie?" "I'd prefer the truth." "Officially he's on vacation. Really, he's at the galactic trig." "The galactic trig," Mulder said slowly. "You mean he's not on earth." "I know, it does sound crazy." Adam admitted. "When John and Elizabeth returned from there, I didn't believe it either." "You'll have to take me there sometime." "It's not that great, it's like going to the UN." "Boring." Ami said, coming into the room. Mulder could feel the bond between them. "A bunch of people from different plants thinking their better then everyone else." Adam looked up to Ami, then back to Mulder. "About General Damon. Sometime in his life, the American government put a implant into is mind." "Let me guess, he broke out when it was removed." "I know it sounds mad." Ami said. Actually it doesn't. I know the American government has records of everyone who had small pox vaccine." "So a government who did that might also put implants in someone." Ami said, reading his mind. "We were told you where a skeptic." megabyte said. "Will you help us?" Ami asked. "Of course I will!" Mulder promised. "You won't regret this." she promised. **********************************
