Warning: The John of this story is NOT John Doggett Summary: While investigating the disappearance of a teacher, Mulder and Scully learn more about their new powers. You see the world through your cynical eyes You're a troubled young man I can tell You've got it all in the palm of your hand But your hand's wet with sweat and your head needs a rest And you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it How can you be such an angry young man? When your future looks quite bright to me How can there be such a sinister plan? Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man) Lyrics by Tommy Shaw ****************** Mulder worked in a room at the lab. The room seemed very familiar to him, though he couldn't put his mind on as to how. Disk after disk was filled with his memories of Scully. Across the hallway was the sickbay, where Ami kept a vigil at Adam's side. A few hours later, Adam woke up. He looked up to Ami and smiled. "I have the most enormous headache." "It'll get better." Ami smiled. "How did it happen?" "You had a madman beating the crap out of you." Mulder got to his feet, and went to Adam's side. "I didn't do too well, did I?" "Your cry for help was the only thing that saved your life." Ami reached out, stroking his forehead. "I have a message for you, from Scully." "Scully, did you rescue her?" "No, she transmitted to me, right before she was given her implant." "What did she want me to know?" "Megabyte's still alive. Scully told me that they where having trouble getting an implant to work with him." "Then it's good news. Thanks Mulder." "We're there's life, there's hope." Ami smiled. "I hope so." Mulder went back across the hallway to the laptop he was working on. He knew TIM was there, but he wanted to be able to do the work on his own. It kept his mind off of Scully. "Is John here?" Adam asked, he began to get up. "It's not advisable for you to get up yet." TIM told him. "I need to speak to him. It's very important." "Stay resting, I will notify him." A few moments passed, and John walked into the room. He went to Adam's side. "Can I speak to Adam alone." "I think I better be here." Ami told him. "It's okay. I think I can trust him now." Adam told his friend. "All right," Ami nodded. "I'll see what Mulder's doing on the computer." Ami walked across the hallway, she sat down at the table with Mulder. She looked at the open door across the hallway. *Don't say anything Mulder. I want to listen to what's going on. * "I do too." Mulder confessed. "I wanted to thank you for rescuing me." Adam told John. "It was the least I could do." John said. "I know you hate me. I now understand why." "What do you mean?" Adam said puzzled. "I know you believe I killed your mother, and deserted you." "It's the truth." "The truth is, yes, I am guilty for Carol's death." There was pain in John's voice. "When I explained to her about the implant, she begged me to remove it. I told her that I wasn't sure how to. Carol told me that she trusted me." It took a moment for John to gather his thoughts. "Before I attempted to remove the implant, I asked her about the boy who was sleeping in the next room. She told me it was her nephew that she was babysitting." "My cousin wasn't there." Adam said puzzled. "I know that now. I didn't at the time." "What do you mean?" "Carol told me that you where her nephew. When they gave her the implant, they erased her mind. But she was pregnant at the time. She never told me about the pregnancy. By the time you where born, she didn't even remember me. Her sister must have told her my name." John choked. "I had no idea that you where my son until Mulder showed me your original birth certificate." "Do you really expect me to believe that?" "She was the second person to break out on earth. We where alone together for three years. We became more then friends, lovers. I loved your mother more then I've ever loved anyone. If I had known that you where my son, I would have taken care of you." John vowed. "Perhaps you did. The Newman's where good people. They gave me a good life." "But they died too." John pointed out. "They died in a car wreck. They where going to see me in a gymnastics meet." "How old where you?" "Seventeen. I broke out a few weeks after that." Adam sounded troubled. "It was easier to live on the beach by the ship. Sometimes people would teleport in. They always wanted to return home. They never came back. It was much later that I found out, they had been discovered by the government." "When was the first time someone actually came back?" "Two years later." "It must have been hard, being alone for that time." "The ship kept me company. Plus I always hoped that someone would come back." "We've got to stop the implant people." John told him. "I've tried, I can't." "You might not alone. But if all the Tomorrow People work together, we might be able to." John told him. "Why does it matter when a person broke out? The Implant conspiracy wants to destroy all of us. If we don't work together as one team, then they'll win." "They'll wipe us out if we don't change things. We should work together." Adam agreed. ************************************* Tomorrow People sat at a table. Both older TP's and the younger. Mulder sat on the younger side. Though he was an older TP, the younger ones seemed to trust him. "We are all alike." Ami said. "The older Tomorrow People, and the newer." "My personal hatred kept the two sides from working together." Adam told John. "For that, I am sorry." "There are regrets on both sides." John agreed. "The past doesn't matter, as long as we work together." Elizabeth looked at Frohike. "How many Implantation Institutes are there in the world?" "By our count, 42." "There are too many for us to even make a dent in them." Langly said. "Then we must find one place where we can make a difference." John decided. "I agree." Adam said. "Can I say something?" Mulder asked. "Go ahead." "Every one of the Implantation Institutes are connected by a computer network. If we could use several of our computer experts we could destroy their computer network and erase the memories of their computers." "There's too many computers." John said firmly. "There might not be." Langly said. "It would be very easy to use Tim to help us create a computer virus." Frohike continued. "With the virus we could disable the Institutes. Without their computer records they will suffer a major setback." Langly explained. "There are one hundred thousand tomorrow people. There's enough to teleport in and rescue as many implants as we can." "What about their security system?" Adam asked. "Their security system is part of their computer network." Frohike smiled. "Without the system, they'll be too busy trying to get that up to worry about their charges." Langly said. "Tomorrow people have stun guns. We could stun anyone we find." "No guns!" Adam said firmly. "Tomorrow People are peaceful." "Adam, stun guns won't kill anyone, just put them asleep." John told him. "No one will be hurt." "All right," Adam said coming to a dissention. "Let's do it." ************* Mulder's arms where covered matter transporter bracelets. He looked down to them. Band after band snaked their way up his arms. Ami handed him stun gun belt. "I'm still not sure that we should be using these." "It's the only way we can disable the saps." Mulder fastened the belt around his waist. Ami looked at her strangely. "You really are an original." "What do you mean?" "Calling Homo-sapiens Saps. All of you elders do it. It's pretty offensive isn't it?" "How can you say that? Look what they've done to us." Mulder looked at the woman. "The humans are hunting us down, and trying to put implants in us." "They have reasons, deluded as they are." Ami put her own belt on. "The entire human race aren't conspiring to hurt the Tomorrow People. Just a few." "Do I have to like those few?" "As long as you don't call them saps, I don't see a problem with it." Ami's mind briefly went to Adam. "Have you thought of what will happen once you get Megabyte back?" Mulder asked. "We'll go back to the way it was. I'm married to Megabyte." "Is that far to Adam?" "Adam understands what we had was temporary." "Tomorrow People are the next stage in human development. Who says that their relationships can't evolve too?" Mulder pointed out. "What's that got to do with Adam?" Ami asked puzzled. "Simple. If humans have paired relationships, why can't tomorrow people have triads?" "Triads." Ami said slowly. "Adam loves both you and Megabyte. How does Megabyte feel about Adam?" "The same." She admitted. "I'll need some time to think about it, but it has possibilities." Adam walked up to them. "Are you ready?" "As ready as I'll ever be." Ami smiled. ************************** They teleported into the Institute. No one was there, only the Tomorrow people. "Where is the staff?" Mulder asked. Adam tilted his head. "They're off working with the computers." There was a teenaged girl on a table. She had been strapped down. Part of her head had been shaved. Mulder walked to her, turning her head. She didn't have a scar. Mulder placed a bracelet on her wrist. "TIM, teleport her." "Teleporting now." the voice droned. Against the wall were three gurneys, all holding sedated tomorrow people. Ami put bracelets on them. In an instant they were gone. Mulder drew his stun gun. He went to the door, and looked out. Two guards where standing outside the door. He shot one, and then the other. He grabbed the first one and drug him inside. "Adam, help me with the other one." "Sure thing," Adam grabbed the unconscious solder and drug him into room. *Use telepathy from now on. * Adam suggested. As they walked down the hallway, they examined each room. They where able to find twelve more tomorrow people. Eight non-telepaths had been stunned. *Adam, we've found a ward with about 30 TP's." Sasha a Russian Tomorrow person telepathed. *Wonderful, get them out of there. * Adam ordered. "This is too easy." Mulder said as they went down the hallway. "I agree." Ami drew her stun gun. They found a door that was covered by bars. It seemed more like a jail cell then a part of the institute. Ami rushed to it. She peered in. "Megabyte!" Megabyte got to his feet and staggered to the door. He put his hand on top of Ami's. "I never thought I'd see you again." "How many are in there?" "Four." "Stand back, we'll get you out." "No, you can't! The floor is covered with barlumin." Megabyte told them. "Barlumin?" Mulder echoed. "It's a mineral that can take away a Tomorrow Person's powers." Adam explained. "So their no longer Tomorrow People." Mulder guessed. "Only with prolonged exposure." Adam put his hand in front of the lock, and concentrated. There was a click, and the lock opened. Megabyte promised. He glanced at Mulder. "Scully's here. She's been implanted." "I know." Mulder could feel something. A presence that seemed extremely familiar to him, a person that was full of hate. "Trouble's coming. You've got to get them out of there." Megabyte and Byers carried out a very confused looking Scully. Jade closely followed her. Adam gave them matter transporters, and they were gone. Mulder could see Krycek coming down the hallway followed by several guards. "I'll take care of Krycek." Mulder went down the hallway. "Mulder, don't!" Adam said. "He'll kill you!" *I'm expendable. You need to take care of the rest. * Mulder shot the guards around Krycek. His former partner came to him, and punched him in the face. Mulder found himself falling. Krycek kicked Mulder in the face. Mulder could hear the pop as his nose broke. Krycek pulled a gun. "I've let you live too long. I should have killed you years ago." "Go to hell." "You first." Mulder heard the catch of the trigger being pulled. There was a hiss, and Krycek fell to the ground unconscious. Adam knelt beside Mulder. "How are you doing?" "Terrible." He admitted. "Teleport back to the ship." Adam ordered. "I'm not sure I can." he admitted. Adam handed him a matter transporter. In an instant, Mulder was gone. *************************
