JOHNNY HERBERT
A horrendous accident in the Formula 3000 Championship almost ended
Herbert's career before it had properly begun, but the popular Brit bounced
back to make his Formula One debut in 1989. He won his First Grand Prix
in Britain in 1995, pleasantly surprising a crowd that had turned up to
witness a Damon
Hill victory. After two decent seasons and one disappointing one at
Sauber Herbert has joined Stewart, and will probably be relieved to see
the back of Jean
Alesi. The Frenchman spent much of last year complaining about Herbert,
who has an excellent reputation within Formula1 circles as a provider of
useful insight into car functionality. Unless they have improved dramatically,
that is input the Stewart team will desperately need. 1998 Scored one point
in the opening race and failed to add to it over the season. 1997 Finishes
in 10th position with one podium finish to his credit 1996 An unremarkable
season sees him finish 14th, with only
one points- scoring finish - third place at Monza. 1995 Despite finishing
4th in the Drivers' Championship with two victories - in Britain
and Italy - to his credit he loses his ride with Benetton. 1994 Nomad Herbert
tries out with three different teams during the course of the season. He
starts
the year off with Lotus before moving to Ligier for the European
GP. He ends the championship with Benetton 1993 Driving with Lotus
Ford, he finishes the season in 9th place 1992 He picks up his first points
with Lotus Ford with a sixth place finish in South Africa. He ends the
season in
14th place 1991 He drives seven races with Lotus Judd, failing to disturb
the points table in any of them 1990 Joins Lotus Lamborghini, racing in
the Japanese and Australian
GPs 1989 Finishes 4th in the Brazilian
grand prix to earn the first podium finish of his career. He gains
two further points in
the USA to finish 14th overall.
