The Secret of Monkey Island Complete Walkthrough This is the final version of the complete walkthrough to the Secret of Monkey Island. It contains all the necessary guidelines and hints for completing the game. For you convenience I have divided it into a few sections so it will be easier to find a place: This walkthrough has been written by Dan Kronholm and may not be used elsewhere without Dan Kronholm's permission. About 12 hours of hard work have been put in to this, so please respect the copyright. Part one - The three trials. The first trial - Treasure huntery: Start off by walking to the left. Open the door to the Scumm Bar. Talk to some of the pirates and perhaps even the little doggie (and yes, it is called Spiffy). The only one's you need to talk to are the important-looking pirates. Tell them you want to be a pirate. They'll tell you that you first have to go through the three trials. The trials are: Wordplay, thievery, and, er, treasure huntery. With this in mind, sneak in to the kitchen when the cook has left it and is out of sight. Take the hunk of meat from the table and the pot underneath. Open the door to the bridge. A bird will come and eat from the fish. Walk to the plank on the most right about 5 times until you are able to steal the fish from the bird. Now leave the Scumm Bar. A cut scene will appear. Head left and up the cliff. Walk past the lookout point and to the right. You now see a map of Mêlée Island (from the Blimp Cam). Perhaps it's a good thing to know that this is the normal way of going from one place to another throughout Monkey Island 1,2 and 3. Go to the clearing about in the middle of the island. Go left and into the circus tent. You'll see the famous Fettucini Brothers. Talk to them and agree to letting them fire you out of the cannon. They'll ask you for a helmet and so, you give them the pot. Then they fire you out of the cannon. Voile! You now have 478 pieces of eight. Leave the circus and go to the map. Go to the village, past the Scumm Bar and into the archway on the right. Go talk to the guy with the parrot on the corner. He'll ask you if you have a cousin named Sven. Say 'no, but I once had a barber named Dominique'. He finds it close enough to his secret code and will now sell you a map. Buy it and walk to the left and talk to the Men of Low Moral Fiber (Pirates) (Try to scare off their rat). Ask them if they know the guy on the opposite corner. They'll offer you some PTA minutes. Get one if you can get two pieces of eight for it. Go visit the voodoo lady in one of the buildings and get the rubber chicken from the chest. Talk to her and leave. Walk down the archway, under the big clock. Walk left and into the jail (the place with bars in front of the windows). Talk to the prisoner a bit. This will allow you to buy breath mints at the grocer's. Go out. Walk into the last house on the right. This is the grocer's. Get the shovel and the sword. Hit the bell on the counter. Buy the shovel, the sword and some breath mints. Now ask him who you can test the sword out on. He will now leave to ask the Sword master a favor or something. Save yer game and follow the grocer. Bingo! Now you know where she is. Go to the map. Notice that a new place has appeared. The Sword master. Amaze yourself and head into the fork Go through the passage at left and then up. Pick up the yellow flowers. Use them on the hunk of meat you found in the kitchen. Now look at your map. Guybrush things it looks like dancing lessons, but it is a map. There's three verses each with three lines. Each line starts with a direction. You must write these directions down, or memorize them and then follow them. You must begin where you first start when you enter the fork. You should now have found the treasure. Congratulations! Go right and use the shovel on the X. Now you have the 'treasure'. Try looking at it :) One trial down, two to go. The second trial - Thievery: Go out of the fork and to the village. Onto the archway, under the clock, past the prison and left to the Govenor's Mansion. Your way is now blocked by the Govenor's deadly piranha poodles. Give the meat with the condiment to them and watch them die. THEY'RE ASLEEP!!! Open the door to the mansion and step inside. Open the door next to the vase and enter. Sit back and enjoy the show. When it's over, Guybrush needs to get a file. Go to the prison and give the breath mints and the gopher repellent to the prisoner. He will give you a carrot cake. Use it and you have a file. Go back to the mansion and walk to the gaping hole. Now you will meet Elaine. 'Talk' to her. When she leaves, walk out the door from which you came. Fester will stop you and drop you into the water (if you stay under more than 10 minutes you WILL drown..quite funny actually. This is btw. the ONLY place you can die in Monkey Island 1 and 2). Take the idol. On the dock you'll meet Elaine, but she quickly leaves you to finish your trials. The third trial - Wordplay: Leave the dock and go to the map. Go to the house on the middle east direction. You'll be stopped by a troll. Give him the fish. Head for the house once more. Open the door and ask the man if he can train you. Convince him that you do have what it takes. Show him your money and your sword. Now you must pay good attention to what he says about sword fighting. When he's done training you, go to the map and stop every pirate you meet. Don't be sad if you don't get all the answers and questions at once. It usually takes some time to get them all. (When a pirate gives you a new dare/line, you can use it in you next fight and then perhaps get an answer for it too). Anyway. Here are the lines if you can't work them out for yourself. When you have defeated the Sword master, go to the village. Getting a crew together to rescue Elaine: LeChuck has kidnapped Elaine. Leave the dock and enter the Scumm Bar. Get all the mugs and go to the kitchen. The object is now to fill a mug with grog, then you must transport it to the prison where you use it on the lock. Do that, but remember that you'll have to pour the grog to another mug before it is grog near death. After freeing Otis, leave the prison to see another cut scene. Now you need to convince the Sword master to come with you. Go to her and do it. Now go to the map and to the place with the lights. This is Stan's. The ship you need is the Sea Monkey. Tell him you don't have very much to spend and he'll show it to you. Ask him if you can have one on credit. He'll tell you you can get credit at the grocer's. Go there. Once there, go talk to the grocer. Ask him for credit. Remember the combination to his safe as he opens it. Ask him to go see the Sword master and unlock the safe by pushing and pulling the correct combination. Now you have the note, so go back to Stan's. Now you must press his price for the ship. This is done by saying you don't need any of the extras and maybe even leaving him once. When you have the ship you only need one more crew member. Go to Hook Island, the place that says island on the map (north). Use the rubber chicken on the cable and enter the house. Talk to meathook and eventually you must face the monster to test your courage. When you've done that, head to the dock (in the village) where Stan is waiting. Part Two - The Journey The crew have turned their backs on you so you should now try to find a way to Monkey Island. Get the feather pen and ink from the table. Take the dusty book from the drawer in the middle cabinet. Go onto the deck. Talk to the crew if you want. Climp up the rope ladder, get the jolly roger, enjoy the view, get sick and climp down again. Go down the hatch. Walk down the next hatch. Take some rope from the barrel. open the kegs to the left to get some gunpowder. Open the chest to the right and look in it to find some fine wine. Walk up the ladder and into the next room in through the door. Open the cupboard and get a pack of cereal. Open the cereal to get the prize. The prize is a key to open the cabinet which is in the room you started in. You will find a chest in the cabinet which you must take, open and look at. You will get a piece of paper and some cinnamon sticks. Head back to the kitchen. Look at the paper. This is a recipe to get you to Monkey Island. Now, dump all your items in the pot (except 100% cotton tshirt, this must be put in the fire to get flaming mass instead). Just drop everything all you can. After the cut scene go get some gunpowder. Go to the deck. You have come to Monkey Island! Now you need to get onto the island. You got a pot and a cannon, now guess what. Yep. Put gunpowder in the nozzle and put the rope in the back as a fuse. Light the fuse and quickly use the pot. Part Three - Under Monkey Island In this part you must note that this walkthrough is pretty superficial. I suggest you read all the notes (they're funny) and talk to the characters, although it is not necessary. Well .. off you go. Get the banana and walk to jungle. The map is divided into 5 parts. East, west, south, north and middle. Go to the west part and find the fort. Get the spyglass and the rope there. Push the cannon and when Herman Toothrot leaves, take the gunpowder. Go to the river fork in the middle. Get the note and rock. Go up the footholds you see in the background. The primitive art you see is a catapult. It works very simply. You shoot with it by pushing a rock down onto it, above from the viewpoint. You have two targets to hit. You'll need to relend the catapult by getting a new rock and you must also push and pull the catapult for aiming at things. Make sure you his the banana tree, then go back to the river fork. Use the gunpowder in the dam. Open the spyglass and use the lens with the sun. Go to the pond and get the rope from the dead man. Go to the crack on the south side. Use the rope with the tree or the branch. Climp down and use the other rope with the sturdy stump. Climp down, get the oars and get up to the jungle again. Go to the south beach and use the oars with the boat. Wee.. you have a row boat. Row around the east side and dock at the north beach. Go to the jungle and go to the village. Go extreme left and get the fruit. Try to leave. If you want to see the three headed-monkey later, choose line 4; "look behind you! A three-headed monkey!" when you talk to the Cannibals. They put you in prison. Take the skull and open the loose board in the floor. Go down the hole. Find the row boat and row to the south side. Go to the monkey you see on the south side. Feed it with the five bananas you've gathered. Now go to the middle of the map and then east. Go to the clearing. Go right and pull the nose of the totem pole. Go to the giant monkey head and get the wimpy little idol. Get your boat and head for the cannibals. Give them the idol. Get the banana picker in the prison and talk to Herman outside. Give him the picker. In exchange you get the monkey key. Go to the jungle and back to the village. Talk to the cannibals and when you have talked about the head, look at your leaflet and give it to them. You get the head. Go to the giant monkey where you found the idol and unlock it by using the key in the ear. To find LeChuck's ship in the catacombs (inside the monkey head), use the head. Follow its nose. LeChuck's ship: Talk to the head. Convince it to give you its necklace. Use the necklace. Enter the ship. Enter the room to the left. Use the compass on the key hanging on the wall. Leave the room and go down the hatch. Go right and pick up chickens. Use the feather you got on the sleeping ghost next door to get his grog. Use the key in the hatch and descent. Use the grog on the dish and take some grease to the right. Go to the deck and use the grease on the door at your left. Open it, enter and get the ghost tools. Use these tools to open the crate by the pigs and the chickens. Look in it and get the root. Now that you've got the root, leave the ship.While you're waiting at the cannibals you'll see the three headed-monkey again. Last Part - Guybrush Kicks Butt This part is easy. There's only one thing you can do and that is to get to the church. The church is located between the prison and the grocer's. Later, when you are at Stan's, take the root beer on the ground and use it on LeChuck. BOOM!
