Mother's Day

By Anna van Gemert ______________________________________

Update:

Maggie and PJ were trying to keep their relationship a secret, but Clancy court PJ kissing Maggie and 'she didn't want to'. He then passed this information on to Sergeant Croyden and the rest of the heelers and after 2 months, Maggie and PJ's relationship was out in the open - EVERYONE COULDN'T OF BEEN HAPPIER FOR THEM.

Maggie and PJ shared many secrets after their shared secret was out. PJ admitted to Maggie that he was adopted. With Maggie's influence PJ wrote a letter to his biological mother, and he then got a reply. PJ and his mother, Sally met a few times. PJ did not want to meet his real father as he was serving time in Perth for rape, but he did not know that Joseph, his dad was out on parole.

A rape then occurred in Mt. Thomas on a little girl who was about 12 years old. PJ and Maggie got fingerprints of the attacker and Maggie found that they were the prints were PJ's real father. They charged his father and he was sent back to prison after PJ finally spoke to him. ______________________________________

She sat on a chair and stared at the results of the test she just took with Zoe Hamilton the day before. It was there on paper - black and white. They had been so careful, how could this be. It was May 10th, 1998. PJ was about to arrive to take her down to Melbourne. She wanted to visit her mother's grave for Mother's day, then PJ wanted to drop by Sally's, his real mother place and then his adoptive mother house. How was she meant to tell PJ that she was pregnant? She got up off her chair and went to finish getting ready. Maybe the test was wrong, but no, it had to be right. The next step was to tell PJ.

At nine o'clock on the dot PJ arrived at Maggie's. Maggie didn't want him to stay the night before as she wasn't feeling very well. PJ was wearing his work pants and his green shirt, with his white T-shirt underneath.

"Hi PJ" Maggie said, trying to put on a smile "You okay Maggs?" he asked, seeing that Maggie didn't look her best "Yeah" she lied, "You want to go?" "Sure"

Maggie and PJ went out to PJ's car. Maggie got into the passenger's seat, while PJ got into the drivers set. The drive was relatively quite, and Maggie sat there thinking.

* * * * * * * FLASH BACK * * * * * * * *

Maggie is within the mind with PJ. It's dark but they have torch between them. They were not sitting next to each other. One of them was on mine side of the closed in mine, the other on the opposite side.

PJ: What about Marriage and a family?

Maggie: Well that's a very old fashion thing to say PJ

PJ: No, no. These days you can mix carrier and a family, no problems

Maggie: No, you've seen the statistics - serious relationships don't tend to survive a police force carrier

PJ: Well your parents did

Maggie: No it didn't (pause) or rather what didn't survive is my fathers total single minded ness (Pause) It's not something we Doyle's, we don't like to talk about it. (Pause) Especially amongst ourselves. (Pause) But you know when things were going great there was no worries, but when they weren't, Dad, he could just not switch off!

PJ: But when you’re a copper who can?

Maggie: Yeah, but it was mum who had to deal with all the anger and fustrustion which we can't afford to work off at the station and sometimes, I wonder weather it didn't drag her down with it in the end. Cause they say that about cancer don't they, that it gets you when your residents is really low. (Pause) Relationships and Police work, they just don't mix, someone should really write that in the rule book I think

PJ: Yeah, well maybe what they should write is don't fall in love with someone like you dad

Maggie: Now, there's my problem, now there's a lot that I'm stupid enough to fall in love with

* * * * * * END OF FLASH BACK * * * * * * * *

"You okay Maggs?" PJ asked, still driving "Sure,you want me to drive?" "Nah, I'm fine?"

They had been driving for around 20 minutes and had just passed St. Davids. It was a sunny day, and there weren't many clouds in the sky. In fact their wasn't any.

* * * * * * * * * FLASH BACK * * * * * * * * * *

PJ and Maggie are now sitting next to other, still in the mine shaft. They both were tied, and hungry and to them, no one knew that they were in there.

PJ: You know I always thought I wanted, maybe 6 kids

Maggie: That’s a basketball team and a reserve PJ

PJ: You think 6 is too much?

Maggie: I reckon three's enough

PJ: Yeah, but four's not a bad number, it's a even number

Maggie: Have you ever changed a nappy?

PJ: Yeah, your right, I think one's plenty

Maggie: A Patrick

PJ: mmm

Maggie: After my father

PJ: I wouldn't mind a Margaret (Pause) Well it's after my auntie Margaret

Maggie: I never thought Margaret was a Lebanese name

PJ: Sure it is, it's Lebanese, a lot of my friends are called Margaret, prove it isn't

Maggie: Now you'll say that I can ask anyone Lebanese as they so happens to be one sitting next to me

PJ: As a matter of fact, Ms. Doyle there is

Maggie: I did want kids

PJ: You'll have 'em

Maggie: Will I?

PJ: Come here, Come here

Maggie and PJ and still in the car. There in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, but the cemetery where Maggie's mother is buried is on the other side of the city so they still had a while to go.

Maggie head was resting on the window and no word were being said between her a PJ. PJ was focusing on the road.

* * * * * * * FLASH BACK * * * * * * * *

PJ is in his office, smiling at a photo of himself, Maggie and the freeman baby, Rachael. Maggie enters his office through the door.

Maggie: Hey PJ, Phillips has been changed, what's that?

PJ: What?

Maggie: That, that in your hand

PJ: Oh, I just can't believe that they thought Rachael's our kid, look, she don't look like either of us

Maggie: Yeah, I wonder if we did have a daughter who she would take after

PJ: You, I hope

Maggie: Except for my ears

PJ: Your ears, no, I LOVE your ears

Maggie: Do you? Well she'd have your complexion

PJ: Well I'd like it if she had your lips

Maggie: And you eyes, I'd love it if she had your eyes

PJ: She would be a cutie, wouldn't she?

Maggie: Yeah, she would

PJ: Yeah, she'd be really good

Maggie: Not that it's likely to happen in the near future of course.

PJ: No, absolutely

Maggie: I mean, could you imagine take a stroller out on the job?

PJ: Absolutely not, No

Maggie: I'm going to go and finish off Phillips

* * * * * * * END OF FLASH BACK * * * * * * * *

"What on earth are you thinking about Maggs?" PJ asked "What?" Maggie asked, confused "I've been trying to get your attention for ages" "Sorry, what did you want?" "Did you want and stop and get some flowers before we get there, or something?" "Sure, that's a nice idea"

Maggie and PJ continued driving. Another 10 minutes passed and PJ stoped a small shopping village.

"There's a florist over their Maggs, you want to go to that one" "Yeah" Maggie said opening the door, "You coming?" "Yep"

Maggie and PJ went to the shop and bought some long lasting flowers for the cemetery, as well as two other bunches for PJ's parents. They then continued to the cemetery in the car. Maggie led PJ to the grave site. He had never been there before.

"You okay Maggs?" she asked, softly "Yeah" she replied,

Maggie stood there and looked at the stone which read 'Mrs Jane Doyle born 1931 - Died 1987. Wife of Patrick Doyle, Mother of Michel, Robert and Margaret' She placed the flowers she bought next to it then turned to PJ.

"Do you mind if I have a minute by my self?" "Yeah" PJ said, "I'll go on a short walk"

Before PJ left he gave Maggie and kiss on her forehead. He then walked for about 4 minutes before entering the section of the cemetery where children were buried. There were a few people at some of these graves 'Probably Mothers' PJ thought to him self. He looked at the some of the stones. 'Sad' he thought again, 'Some of these kids only lived for a few days, weeks, months, they didn't even last a year'

Back at Maggie's mother's grave Maggie was sitting on the ground. 'Hey Mum' she thought, 'PJ bought me here, his the detective at Mt. Thomas, his nice. In fact I'm carrying his child, but I haven't told him yet, I don't know how too ….. '

* * * * * * * FLASH BACK * * * * * * * *

They are now in the hospital. It was just after PJ returned from long service leave and he took a phone call from a little boy who's mother wouldn't wake up. His name was Kanga and it took them all day to find him and his family. Kanga was about 4 years old, he also had a little sister. PJ is pacing up and down the corridor.

PJ: You know it's funny how protective you get over a kid you haven't even met?

Maggie: So is he what you imagined, the face on the other end of the phone

PJ: Nah, I was too busy trying to find him, you know it must be shocking being a parent, always worrying, are they okay? Are they safe? If that what it means to be a parents, nut, you can forget it

Kanga: Hey, PJ!

PJ: Hey mate, look at you, hey, look at you

Zoe: Yes, he'll be find with a little bit of food and rest. His mum okay and we've stabilised Elle and they'll just both be in the hospital a little bit longer. In the mean time Kerrin's just staying in the Children's ward.

PJ: Yeah?

Kanga: Where's my train?

PJ: You train, can you hear a train?

Maggie: Can you here a train? (Takes a toy out of a bag)

PJ: Now that is a train!

* * * * * * * END OF FLASH BACK * * * * * * * *

'He would make a great father, he'd have to but I'm sure he'd be scared - I am. He's mothers are really nice, and they'd be really supportive. I guess you know that though. He's adopted'

As Maggie sat there thinking PJ returned. He stood back for a while and just watched Maggie sit there but after a while he though he should go up to her. He took a few steps and then placed his hands on Maggie's shoulders. Maggie turned around suddenly. She had a sad look on her face, and it looked to PJ like she could start to cry at any stage.

"God PJ!" Maggie said, "You scared me" "Sorry" PJ said "That's okay, I guess we should go to Sally's now?" "I'll wait in the car if you want, take all the time you want" "No, we'll go now, can we stop for lunch first - I want to tell you something" "Sure" PJ replied, offering his hand to help Maggie up of the ground "Thanks"

______________________________________

Maggie and PJ went to St. Kilda for Lunch. They though that as PJ's mother's lived near there it would be easier.

"So what do you want for lunch?" PJ asked "Get some take-away and we can eat on the beach" Maggie suggested "Sure, what do you want" "Anyway, PJ, I'm not fused"

PJ took Maggie's had and lead her to a fish and chip shop. They purchased a few potato cakes, and some chips and then walked back over the road, and sat on a bench on the boardwalk.

"PJ" Maggie said, getting PJ's attention, "I need to tell you something" "What's that?" PJ replied, "Maggs?" he asked again, she wasn't saying anything "I'm" she began, "PJ?" "What is it Maggs?" "I'm, I'm, I'm" she repeated, "Pregnant" she blurted out "Maggs" PJ muttered, he wasn't sure what to say but he was pleased. He wanted nothing else then for Maggie to have his child, "That's great!!"

PJ got off his seat and pulled Maggie off hers before spinning her around in happiness.

"PJ!" Maggie yelled, "Put me down!!!"

PJ did as he was told and put her down but still held one of her hands. They began to walk down they path leaving their food before PJ stopped.

"Happy Mother's Day Maggs" PJ whispered in her ear "Thanks PJ" Maggie blushed "And you" PJ said, squatting down to the level of Maggie's stomach, "You be could to your beautiful Mother" "PJ" Maggie said, pulling him up to his level "Yes Mum?" he laughed "Your making a fool of your self" "Sorry" he said before kissing her

Maggie and PJ then continued walking hand in hand down the path. Both of them were very happy. They looked at the children they passed together and also looked at their parents.

"So when did you find out?" PJ asked "Friday" Maggie said, "That's when I took one of those home pregnancy tests, then yesterday I went and saw Zoe" "You should of told me, I would off come" "Yeah, I know, but I was, well I was scared" "That's understandable - I guess that's why you were so out of it in the car" "I was not 'out of it' PJ!" "I wouldn't be too sure" "Oh, get lost! Do you want to know when it's due?" "Do I ever!" PJ said "Well I'm about 1 month pregnant now - and Zoe said it's due around February 12th" "God that seems ages away!" PJ complained "Tell me about it PJ!" Maggie replied "So I guess we should get going to Sally's?" "Are you planning on telling my parents today?" "You mean WE?" Maggie questioned "Well do we want to tell them?" PJ repeated in a different way "We might as well, it's not like we actually come here that often, or they come up to Mt. Thomas" "Then do you mind if we go to Mum's first?" "I thought as much - let's go"

***

"Hey Mum!" PJ said when his mother opened the her front door "Patrick" she replied, "I thought you weren't coming till tonight?" "Change of plans" Maggie added, "Besides I couldn't wait to give you your present!" "Well, dear, I don't see anything behind your back, like last year or Christmas" "Oh, sorry, mum but you won't exactly see it for another 8 months" PJ smiled "Your?" PJ's mother asked, turning to Maggie, "Pregnant?" "One month" "Darling, that's fantastic!"

PJ's Mother gave Maggie and hug, then turned to PJ, and gave him the same treatment. The three of them then sat down on PJ's mother couch for about an hour before PJ announced that they better make a move for Sally's. PJ's mother walked them out side, and this is where PJ gave his mother the bunch of flowers he had purchased.

PJ and Maggie walked to Sally's house and took some flowers for her as well. Sally was just as pleased for them as PJ's adoptive mother was. Again PJ and Maggie talked for about a hour before leaving.

***

"So what did he say?" PJ asked, after Maggie got off the phone with her father a day or so later. "You know" she said sadly "No I don't" PJ replied, pulling Maggie to him, "I only heard you side of the conversation" "He said he would come down on the weekend, but he was please for us" "That good" PJ smiled "He raised some good points though" Maggie said, "We can't raise a child in two houses PJ" "I've been thinking about that too Maggs" PJ replied, "Dash is living with you, and it's not fair to kick her out, but your place is bigger, and down have a back yard - I only have a court yard. So I was thinking, Dash could take over the lease of my place. In a sense it would be better for her" "How's that?" "She'll have her own place, and when she gets together with Adam she won't have a much sneaking round to do, if they keep it a secret" "That's not THAT funny PJ" "Okay, I'll admit that Maggs" "Now all we have to do is tell Chris and everyone at the station" "Boss first" PJ said "Then Dash" Maggie added "And she can tell the others"

***

"Boss" Maggie said, "I was wondering if you could come over to PJ's tonight, or we could come over to you place - we need to speak to you about something" "Okay Doyle, I'll come to PJ's - what time?" "Let's say 7" "Okay"

***

"Come in Boss" Maggie said, opening the door and directing him into the lounge room "What can I do for you Doyle?" "PJ" Maggie called, and PJ came running into the room with a coffee for each of them "Thanks PJ" "No problem, so what is it?" Tom questioned "We don't know how to put this" PJ started for a change "Well we do" Maggie correct, "I'm…" "Pregnant?" Tom guessed "How did you know?" Maggie and PJ asked in unison "I just know the look, after Nell" he said, sadly "Sorry" Maggie said "No, don't be, congratulations. What are you planning on doing?" "Well" PJ began "We wanted to tell you first, which we have. And now Dash, as it also concerns her with housing arrangements, and then everyone else" "Okay" Tom said, "How far along are you" "Just over one month" PJ jumped in before Maggie had a chance

***

"Dash" Maggie called, entering the house with PJ that same night, "Dash?" "In here!" Dash yelled from the kitchen, finished making a cup of tea, "Want one?" "No thanks" Maggie said "No" PJ replied "Can we speak to you for a minute?" "Sure" Dash said, "but you don't need to" she continued happily, "Your pregnant" "How did you know?" "I found the home test kit this morning cleaning up" "Sorry, I was just about to tell you" "Maggie, it's fine, Congratulations" Dash said, "How far along?" "Just over a month" Maggie said, this time before PJ had the chance "Told anyone else?" "Just the boss" PJ said "So, do you want to go the Imperial?" Dash wondered, "Tell everyone else?" "Sure"

***

"Hey Maggie, PJ, Dash" Chris said, "Usual?" "No" Maggie said, "I'll just have a water" "Okay"

Maggie, PJ and Dash joined Nick, Adam and Tom at a table and Chris bought their drinks up, but was about to go back to the bar,

"Chris" Maggie called, "Wait" "Okay" Chris said "I'm not sure how to put this" Maggie began, "but, I'm" "She's pregnant" Dash called. "Congratulations" Adam said, waking up "That's great Maggie" Nick said Seriously, "So who's the father?" he joked "Nick!" PJ said, annoyed "I know, well I guess it's you Joseph" "Yes, Nicolas, it is me" he smiled

THE END!

The next bit is coming soon. I really would like any feed back, and/or any suggestions for my next few stories connecting to this. I'm trying my hardest to write more fanfics with characters other then Maggie and PJ, but it's harder then it looks!
