I'm Cherokee but was not raised with my culture. The Cherokee relatives that I know of are passed on...but I am searching for other relatives that were lost over the years. My Cherokee great great grandfather was born right around the Trail of Tears in North Carolina, although I don't know where. His family lived/hid in the woods/mountains until he was older and he ran away from home to Mississippi. Later his decendents moved to Granbury, TX and then to Norfolk, Nebraska. I have been searching for other relatives and hope to one day find my connection again with the tribe. In the meantime I've dedicated my free time to working with the Center for Tribal Studies in Tahlequah, OK, AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) and other Indian organizations that welcome my time and contributions. I am so excited about your plans to walk the Trail of Tears and commit myself to helping you in any way that I can. I will send your information onto other Indian people/organizations that I work with so that the word is spread far and wide. I hope that I will also learn more about the heritage and culture that has been lost through the generations. Please keep me informed. And Wa do! for taking the initiative to start this.

I am of mixed descent but most of my ancestors come from Western NC and Eastern TN. I grew up in Illinois, far removed from my heritage but always close in my heart and Spirit. I did not understand a lot of the experiences and feelings that I had as a child regarding Native issues and didn't even know that I had Cherokee blood until I was 10 or so. But somehow memories of the trail and my Ancestor's have been given to me and for the last 12 years I keep finding a connection with the Trail of Tears. I understand now that the Ancestors have been calling and we are hearing! Let us put aside the divisions that conquered us in the past and come together in unity and support this walk. . .for ALL of our Relations. I hope to join the walk at some point in Illinois and will commit to hold daily prayers of support for the ones who are doing the entire walk. Wado Great Spirit for calling and Wado for those who listen!

In December 1979 I traveled from California to the northeast tip of Oklahoma, looking for our Cherokee Great-Grandmother's grave and didn't find Her. It started to snow, and I headed south determined to find out how she ended up in that part of Oklahoma. I was not emotionally prepared for what I learned. I traveled as close as I could along the Trail, winding up to the Great Smokies and ending up in Florida. 8 days ago, we received word that her grave had been found. Next to her parents. When the snow melts, I'm going to go back. I am grateful for the internet and for you...our relatives. It has been a long time. I pray for balance. My silent wrath is great. We realize to be officially recognized by the Cherokee Nation, we may have to grovel at the feet of the same entity (Feds, BIA, et al.?)that tortured us. This is going to be difficult. www.petitononline.com has a petition "Remove Jackson From the Twenty"..in the dreaming we are healed.
