Blue with a white triangle edged in red that is based on the outer side and extends to the hoist side; a brown and white American bald eagle flying toward the hoist side is carrying two traditional Samoan symbols of authority, a staff and a war club.
As we drive the old Chevy to the capital's airport in Pago Pago, we will board one of the island's turbo prop engine airplanes, to fly over some of the islands. There are only 2 airports in American Samoa, and none of them are on the islands that we will be going to see.
There is no place like home, and speaking of home here are a couple of houses that the natives live in ~>
Here is a house, up on stilts because of the rainy season from December to March and the several hurricanes that come thru.
Below is a photo of a typical Samoan open air house.
In this photo the smaller island in the background is the Aunu'u Island, the main Island here is an overhead view on a typical village near the shoreline.
Below is the island of Rose Atoll, where the reefs are a bright pink color along the coralreef line. Be careful not to cut yourself on the coral as it takes a long long time to heal from that type of cut.
Here is,.....well it's one of the USA DRIFTERS members....relaxing and looking out at the ocean on the Island of Ofu.
And as we look out at Ofu Island's South Shore we can see The National Park. Located some 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii, this is one of the most remote national parks in the United States. It is also one of the newest; it was authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1988 and officially established in 1993 when a 50 year lease was signed. And one of the last presidential acts of President Ronald Reagan
In the ocean in this part of the world, you can see many different types of fish. Here is an example. This is the
"black and white box fish".
And along with the many different fish, there are also many differant types of birds. This is the " masked-booby bird".
