History of The Chapter

The Lawton/Ft. Sill Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has a very unique history. In late 1962, eight noble members of the Bond met in the home of Brother Everett Moore to discuss establishing a local chapter in Lawton/Ft. Sill. The first goal was to sponsor a social function which was a dance at the Fair Grounds Pavillion on December 8, 1962. This goal was very successful. On January 20, 1963, the Lawton/Ft. Sill Interest Group met in the home of Brother Elmer E. Stewart to begin the process of securing a local chapter and charter. Two months later, on March 23, 1963, the Lawton/Ft. Sill Alumni Chapter was born. The charter members were: Andrew C. Hill, Elmer E. Stewart, Jessie Stewart, Phail Wynn, Herbert C. King, Ted Johnson, Robert Fairchild, John Erivin, and General Wade.

History and Objectives of Kappa Alpha Psi

On January 5, 1911, Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on the campus of Indiana University by Elder Watson Diggs and nine other astute men of achievement. It was known as Kappa Alpha Nu until April 15, 1915. On that date, the name was changed to Kappa Alpha Psi because of a racial slur made by a Caucasian student ("Kappa Alpha Nig"). The founders wanted to develop a formula that would inspire African American students to reach higher goals. With this in mind, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting African American male collegians of culture, honor, and patriotism in a bond of fraternity. As a result, chapters were formed at Illinois (Beta), Iowa (Gamma), and Wilberforce (Delta). By 1919, there was a majority of African American Degree Holders to form Alumni Chapters. In 1922, Guide Right, which is the national service program for Kappa Alpha Psi, was created by Brother Leon W. Steward.

The objectives of Kappa Alpha Psi are:

(1) To unite college men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond of fraternity.

(2) To encourage men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond of endeavor.

(3) To promote the spiritual, social, intellectual, and moral welfare of its members.

(4) To assist the aims and purposes of colleges and universities.

(5) To inspire to service in the public interest.
