America's Pride and Joy
Following World War II the United States had no superliner of their own. The US merchant marine's largest ship was the elegant SS America, but she was out classed by the British Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth. As well the United States military saw the potential in having it's own super liner to carry troops in for the next war. With the Queens able to transport 15,000+ men in one voyage they shortened the war by at least one year as remarked by Winston Churchill. So began the life of the United States in Newport News, Virginia. Designed by Francis Gibbs, the United States would be the greast ship in history. The United States was built using tax dollars for the United States Lines. She is 992 feet long and is 53,329 tons. Her first voyage was in 1951. She captured the speed record for eastbound and westbound crossing from the Queen Mary. She still currently holds the record for westbound crossing today. United States today now is docked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania awaiting her future.
