Lee attack nullified by Bruins
by Jim Ryan, The Connection
According to Lake Braddock football coach Francis Dall, it's no secret his Bruins are struggling offensively. But fortunately for Bruin fans, so is every other team's offense when lining up against Braddock's defense.
The undefeated Bruins took advantage of turnovers and special teams play in recording their fifth consecutive shutout to down the Lee Lancers, 17 – 0, at Richard M. Lewis Memorial Stadium in Burke. The Bruin defense, which has not allowed an opponent into their end zone since mid-September, leads the region in points allowed, averaging 4.1 per contest.
"We felt it was going to come down to a few big plays and it did," said Lee coach Joe Muckett. "They (the Bruins) are an opportunistic football team and took advantage tonight to win."
The Bruins first relied on special teams play. Sophomore Peter Ouk set up Steve Finnern's 20-yard field goal after Lee's first possession. The Bruins then applied defensive pressure during Lee's next possession, resulting in defensive end Adam Moore's fumble recovery. Lake Braddock linebacker collected another fumble just inside the Lee red-zone which queued the Bruin offense.
"We're an assignment-based defense," said Jarrell. "Tonight we changed more formations and blitzed which made the difference."
Lake Braddock quarterback Richard Sosa promptly hooked up with wide receiver Mark Malone from six yards out for a Braddock touchdown. "I was on the backside with man coverage,"said Malone.
Finnern notched the extra-point to give the Bruins a double-digit lead. "I felt we were lucky tonight," said Dall. "They (the Lancers) were impressive, but hurt themselves with mistakes."
The Bruins used the same combination in the second half. First, Braddock linebacker Donnie Lindsey crashed through the Lee line to block a punt. The Braddock offense then controlled the ball behind 40-yards' worth of Ouk runs before Ryan Neff (24 carries, 96-yards) blasted into the end zone from four yards out for the games final score. Malone then intercepted Lee quarterback Sean Dunn (13-for-27 passing, 119-yards) to seal the Bruins shut-out.
"We pulled out every formation we had from the playbook," said Dunn, "but we just couldn't solve their quick swarming defense."
The Bruins' victory set up what could be the Patriot district championship this Friday when they travel to undefeated West Potomac. The Lancers (4-1, 6-2), who are still in the hunt for a playoff spot, will host Langley.
