The Fairfax Journal Friday, October 23, 1998 At a loss for success Paul Bergeron's Picks Lake Braddock (7-0) Lee (6-1) The Bruins are featured again as our "Game of the Week." It's must-win time for Lee,
whose only other loss was to an undefeasted team (Park View in Week 5). Pick: Lake Braddock. Game of the Week Lee brings speed to Lake Braddock by Preston Williams Lee football coach, Joe Muskettt, whose Lancers are in the thick of the Division 6 playoff hunt, says his
team has one primary objective for its non-district game at 7:30 tonight at Lake Braddock. "We just want to save the equipment for Langley and Fairfax the next two weeks," Muskett said. "It could
be an ugly game." It was that way last season early in the game when Lake Braddock scored on a 75-yard pass, 61-yard run, 73-yard interception return and 31-yard run and led 28-0 by the middle of the
second quarter. In fact, after four defensive downs, Lee trailed 21-0. Lake Braddock junior Ryan Neff ran for 109-yards and two touchdowns in the 34-7 win that spoiled the Lancers' 7-0 start.
Lee (6-1) could do likewise to night to the Bruins (7-0). Muskett is skeptical. "I'm not sure we went over there believing we could beat Braddock with their great tradition and
with them being a much bigger school," he said. "It was the first time [the Lancers] had played in a big game. So in the backs of their minds, the kids may have questioned whether they should be on the field with Lake Braddock."
And this season? "They're a lot better than they were last year and we're not as good," said Muckett, whose team's lone loss has been to unbeaten Park View.
Lee is a running team, but senior Sean Dunn threw for a season-high 116-yards last week in a 21-7 win over McLean. He called several audibles. The Lee defense gave up only 110-yards.
The Lancers have enviable team speed in their triple-option attack, but that was also the case last season when they managed just a touchdown against the Briuns. Lake Braddock
thisa season has allowed 26 points all season and has kept offenses out of the end zone for 19-conseecutive quarters. "[Against Lee] you have to play every play to prevent a touchdown," said Lake
Braddock coach Francis Dall, whose team faces West Potomac and Robinson the next two weeks. Dall said in the preseason that his team could be in for another 6-4 season if several sophomores did not come
through. The 10th-graders have responded. Matt Rachal played a rover spot on defense last week in a 14-7 win over Annandale because the two guys ahead of him were injuried. Offensive tackle Mike
Zyvoloski and defensive tackle Ernest Hunter are among other key sophomores. Running back Peter Ouk proved himself last year as a freshman on the varsity. Lee scored all three of its touchdowns in the
second quarter of a 21-7 win over McLean last week. Senior Omar Philmore ran for a TD and caught a TD. |
