This crocheted sampler square is made up of dc stitches with the initials AOC crocheted into the pattern. This square is specially designed for the comfort afghans (comfortghans) created by the loving and caring folks at the
Heartmade Blessings website (formerly Angels Of Comfort). Heartmade Blessings' website is located at: http://www.heartmadeblessings.org

Tip: if your square is not the same width and height (try substituting hdc or sc on the last rows.

Materials:
worsted weight yarn in two colors
Crochet hook, size F / 5 / 3 ¾

Stitches (American stitches):
Chain (ch)
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Double Crochet (dc)
Stitch (st)
Beginning (beg)

Size: 7 " (inches)

Special Notes: To change colors, work last stitch of one color up until the last pull-thru, pick up next color and do last pull-thru with new color. Work over unused color to carry it along in your work, so it will be available for color changing.

Graph Notes: If using graph, each square equals 1 dc stitch. Odd-numbered rows are read from right to left and even-numbered rows are read from left to right (I am right-handed and this is the way the chart is read). Row 1 is at the bottom of the chart. Read chart from bottom to top.

Chain 27.
Row 1: (With main color) 1 Dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as 1 dc), 1 dc in each ch across; ch 3, turn (counts as 1 dc on next row now and throughout). (25 dc).

Row 3: 1 Dc in each of next 3 dc, (change to contrasting color) 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, (change to main color) 1 dc in each of next 18 dc; ch 3, turn.

Row 7: 1 Dc in each of next 3 dc, (contrast color) 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, (main color) 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) dc in next dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) dc in next dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) 1 dc in each of last 4 dc; ch 3, turn.

Row 10: 1 Dc in each of next 3 dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) 1 dc in each of next 17 dc; ch 3, turn.
Row 11: 1 Dc in each of next 16 dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, (contrast color) dc in next dc, (main color) 1 dc in each of last 4 dc; ch 3, turn.
Row 12: 1 Dc in each dc across; ch 2, turn.
TIP: At this point measure your square's width and if the height and width are the same, you do not need to work Row 13. It all depends on you tightly or loosely you crochet and upon which brand of yarn.
Row 13: 1 Hdc in each dc across (note: you may use dc's or sc's on this row instead, but on the square I made, working hdc's on this row made the square's dimensions come out even on height and width).

EDGING:
Rnd 1: Working around perimeter, sc across top and bottom of square; 2 sc in sides of each dc row and 1 sc in side of hdc row (Row 13) and working 2 or 3 sc in each corner (to prevent curling).
