Secretary Riley's State of Education/Satellite Town Meeting

RAISING STANDARDS & STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT are the focus of
this month's Satellite Town Meeting.

On Tuesday, February 17, from 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Eastern
time, Secretary Riley will host a live discussion with a
panel including Seattle Superintendent John Stanford &
Washington Mutual Chair, President & CEO Kerry Killinger.
The panel will look at standards-based reforms in the
Seattle Public Schools & Washington state, and they will
discuss how schools, families, businesses & communities can
work together to create high expectations & raise student
achievement.

Schools & communities in Seattle & throughout Washington
have worked to develop higher standards, increase
accountability & raise student achievement. Washington is
one of several states developing "competency-based" college
admissions standards, which are based on specific skills &
knowledge.

Secretary Riley will also deliver his 5th annual State of
American Education Address on February 17th, which will be
broadcast live from Seattle from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Eastern time. The Secretary will discuss new education
initiatives outlined by President Clinton in his State of
the Union Address, & highlight progress made this past year.

The Secretary's address & the Satellite Town Meeting will
both be webcast live (audio & video) by NASA's Quest
Project. If you would like to participate, please see:
