CURRITUCK LIGHTHOUSE

Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located at Whale Head Bay, Corolla, NC. It was completed in 1874 and stands 158 feet above sea level. This lighthouse is a duplicate of the Bodie Island Light, except it remains unpainted.

To get there take US-158 north of Kitty Hawk and then State 12 toward Corolla, the lighthouse can be seen on the left from the road. We found traffic to be very bad. Since State Road 12 was not even shown on our old map we were expecting this area to be very remote but traffic was very heavy. There has been much development in this area. We liked the setting of the lighthouse & the surroundings. The light keeper's house is now a private residence.

The tower is open every day from Easter through Thanksgiving from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm (5:00 pm after daylight saving time ends). It is closed during storms and high winds. For information call (919) 453-1939.
