Report on clubs' monthly activities

 

Iloilo City Cosmopolitan Lions Club

The Iloilo City Cosmopolitan Lions Club took part in the International Club Twinning Program by twinning with the Guam Sunshine Lions Club last October 10, 1998.

A gift-giving activity was held at Asilo de Molo wherein 10 clubs participated - five from District 204 Guam and five from District 301-B. Then, a luncheon meeting to welcome the officers and members of the Guam Sunshine Lions Club twin club was held. Governor Art Ortega Salomes of District 204 (Guam) graced the affair together with Lady Lion Josephine Salomes and Governor Emilio Capalla, Jr. of District 301-B.

The highlight, the Twinning Ceremonies was held at the Hotel del Rio, Iloilo City.

The next day, the club members joined the Alay Lakad '98 and proceeded with their medical and dental mission at Nagpana, Barotac Viejo.

Iloilo Professional Lions Club

In cooperation with the University of the Philippines - Uganayan sa Pahinungod, the Iloilo Professional Lions Club conducted medical/dental, deworming and blood typing activities at Brgy. Mapili, Grande, Badiangan, Iloilo last November 9, 1998. UP-Ugnayan sa Pahinungod had also distributed various vitamins and medicines.

This activity was made possible through the request of SB Member Anselmo Horlador and the Sangguniang Bayan Members of Badiangan, Iloilo.

This is only one of the various service activities of this all-female Lions Club to fulfill the obligations inherent to the Lion's motto, "We Serve."

Bacolod Katipunan Lions Club

The Bacolod Katipunan Lions Club, together with District Governor Miling Capalla, Jr went to the Provincial jail at Gatuslao Street, Bacolod City last October 3, 1998, and conducted a social outreach program with the inmates which lasted up to 12:00 noon.

Led by Club president Vangie Agaloos - the Lions, after a brief program wherein 300 inmates listened to Pastor Carillo and Lions Maning and Ely Cortes delivered their spiritual messages, served refreshments and provided medical and legal consultations.

Lion Judge Ilvino G. Agaloos and Council chairman Rene Novero, Sr of the Lions Club Presidents of Negros, headed the legal consultation team, while Dr. Jose P. Francisco attended to the medical problems of the prisoners.
On the same day, the members of Bacolod Katipunan Lions Club attended the 25th Induction of Capitol Lions Club at L'Fisher Hotel. District Governor Capalla gave a speech and lauded the unique, wholistic social outreach activity made by the Katipunan Lions Club earlier at the Provincial Jail.

Bacolod City Capitol

The new officers and members of the Bacolod City Capitol Lions club were inducted last October 3 at the L'Fisher Hotel, Bacolod City. The affair was attended by Undersecretary of Department of Trade and Industry, Hon. Melita Salazar as guest speaker and several invited guests from all over the Western Visayas Area. Some past district governors were also present.

During the affair, District Governor Miling Capalla was the inducting officer.
The 25th Silver Anniversary was celebrated in line with the Centennial Celebration of the Philippine Independence and all members and officers were in their superb barong tagalog attire and the ladies in their Filipiniana dresses. Six officers and members from the Cebu Capitol Lions Club, twin club of Bacolod City Capitol Lions also attended.

On October 8, service activities were held at the Holy Family Home in Barangay Cabug, Bacolod City, in celebration of the Lions World Service Day. The club donated a sack of rice, 39 pairs of slippers, dresses, utensils and other goods to the abandoned and abused children in the said institution. This was successfully done through the efforts of all the officers and members of the club.

Cash donation was also made for the livelihood program of the institution for its wards who were likewise treated to a hearty late afternoon snacks and refreshments. This was preceded by an impromptu musical and dance program which brought toys to the wards of the institution who appreciated very much what the Bacolod City Capitol Lions did to them.

The next day was the scheduled operation of two (2) cataract patients in line with the SightFirst project of the club and of the International Association. The two beneficiaries were operated by eye surgeon Dr. Mike Sarabia. Another one was operated by Dr. Ordoyo last October 22 at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Bacolod City.

On October 16, the club held its 4th regular meeting at the Parola Restaurant and played host to its visiting Honorary Member Lion Lion Yukei Honda of Japan during the Masskara Festival last October 19.

Ongoing projects of the Bacolod City Capitol include the Filipino-Japanese Friendship Garden, the Giant Solar Clock, both joint ventures with their twin club, the Mikawa Lions of Japan and the Barangay Villamonte Library, a pet project since 1975.

Cebu First United Lions Club and Cebu Royal Club

For the Cebu First United Lions Club and the Cebu Royal Club, celebration of the World Lions Service Day last October 8, 1998 was in the form of a tree planting activity at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club which is located at Pardo, Metro Cebu. About 100 seedlings were planted.

On the same day, a feeding program took place at the Betlehem Day Care Center, Barangay Laray, Inayawan, Pardo which is adjacent to the dumpsite area. This endeavor resulted in 200 indigent children and youth being fed.

On October 11, the clubs held their fellowship meeting at the residence of Lions Santiago and Rufina Tanchan. This get-together is also in celebration of the Chinese Mooncake Festival.

On October 13, both clubs held their monthly meeting at the Grand Convention Center.

Cebu Diamond

The Cebu Diamond Lions Club donated a set of table tennis set as part of their celebration of the World Lions Service Day last October 8, 1998. Chaired by new Lion member Loreto "Jun" Encomporado, Jr, the event was held at Brgy. Gun-ob, Mactan, Cebu and was attended by President Jimmy Tee, CP J See, PP Ed Sanchez, Directors c. Yongco, Robert Sigu and Charter Secretary/2nd VP Deo Exaltacion.

The donated items which were given to the House of Hope are for the rehabilitated drugs users who requested them. They further requested for additional sporting goods like basketball, volleyball, chess and dart boards which the club promised to deliver next month.

Cebu Downtown

On October 7, 1998, the club held their regular monthly board meeting at the Diplomat Hotel. The next day, a free blood typing event was held in accordance with the Lions World Service Day. The event, held at the Sitio Baca, Apas, Lahug benefitted some one hundred fifty (150) indigent residents.

On October 24, District Governor Emilio Capalla, Jr. made his official visitation of the club and on the 27th the latter participated in the Seminar and Workshop on Drug Abuse Awareness program held at the Provincial Capitol Building.

The Cebu Downtown club continues with its granting of monthly honorarium to the workers at the Club-sponsored Day Care Center at Sitio Banca, Apas and this time with free six (6) gallons of pure and fresh mango juice for their enjoyment.

Cebu Lakandula Lions Club

The Cebu Lakandula Lions Club held its monthly board meeting last October 6, 1998 and their monthly regular meeting on the 20th.

Last October 9 they celebrated their 22nd Charter at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.

The Club's community service for the month of October was the "Oplan Patay Lamok," a dengue prevention and protection drive at their adopted Brgy. Sta. Ana, Capaculan, Labangon Cebu area. Ten (10) liters of premixed chemicals were distributed for fogging to get rid of deadly mosquitoes.

Mandaue Lions Club

In celebration of the World Lions Service Day, the Mandaue Lions Club conducted Free Medical Services last October 8, 1998. The services include free medical consultations, dental with tooth extraction, optometry with free eyeglasses and blood typing. Free medicines were also given out. The free medical affair was held at Barangay Mayana, Naga, Cebu and Barangay DAS, Toledo City.

The service, in cooperation with the Philippine Coastguard Auxiliary and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office was able to treat more than 650 indigent patients.

Lion Eddie Uygfang is the chairman of the said project.

Aside from the free medical services, the Mandaue Lions Club participated in the Alay-Lakad Mandaue 98 held last October 18, 1998. This affair is an annual walk for a cause wherein the club also donated streamers.

Cebu Queen City Lions Club

In observance of the World Lions Service Day , the club's community service encompassed the deworming of Grades one to six pupils of Tisa II Elementary School last October 23, 1998. A fraternal lunch and get-together with the teachers of the said school also took place.

The club was also able to hold their regular board of directors' meeting at the clubhouse last October 7 and 21, 1998.
