TWINNING: Its Origins

The origins of the Lions International club Twinning Program can be traced back to Europe after World War II. "Jumelages" were alliances forged between war enemies. Twin is the English translation of the French word jumelage.

European jumelages continued for years. Finally, 30 years after its inception, the European Lions activity became an official association program.

In 1973-74, International President Tris Coffin of Canada included jumelage in his presidential program, "Nine Keys to International Understanding and Cooperation." This transformed jumelage into today's Lions International Club Twinning Program.

Twinning is now one of the most popular of all Lions International programs. As of September 1997, there were 5500 signed Lions club twinning agreements. The program is active in almost every Lions country.

So, what is the importance of twinning?

Twinning provides clubs with a unique opportunity to learn about life in another culture. Through simple correspondence, they illustrate the First Object of the Lions. "To create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world."

Often, clubs start by exchanging letters and then find themselves exchanging bulletins, banners, videotapes, audiotapes, recipes or food. All of these items reveal local customs. Whenever possible, Lions visit their twin club.

In addition to Lions, Leos can also participate in the twinning program. The same rules apply for Leos, and the same results occur. The only restriction is that Lions twin with Lions and Leos twin with Leos.

In either case, most clubs enter into one or two twinning agreements so that they can cultivate and sustain these relationships through the years. However, there are exceptions. The Lilydale Lions Club of Australia has 44 twins.
