One of the new brick trains delivered to Virgin West Coast this week

Sir Richard Branson's efforts to upgrade rail services between Liverpool and the capital (which is London) were dealt a major blow this week when it was announced that 40 new units delivered for West Coast services by Bombardier Trains had been made of brick.

'This is just the sort of thing we could do without' said Virgin spokesman Titus Vess. 'It seems that an engineer at the company's Derby works misread the order sheet. I'm amazed that their quality control systems didn't pick this up.'

Virgin is now taking the Canadian industrial giant to court in an attempt to reclaim lost revenue while the trains are rebuilt in more traditional materials.
