Me and my buddy Gasford--"Gas".
Brian.
Tommy.
The boys enjoing the ride.
Henry the fisherman---My Jamaican counterpart.
This guy is amazing. Up before dawn, this man will paddle his home made canoe up to 15 miles in a morning in search of fish, lobster and conch. Then he will cook the catch of the day for you, for lunch or diner. What a deal mon !
Hopeton, Gas's new helper.
Me and Vincent go back a long time too. We get up before dawn to go trolling for tuna, pick up some tourists around 9:00am for a snorkeling session, then maybe a beach or cliff tour after lunch. Cool mon !
Bumped into Dr. Al and his friend Flo while in Jamaica this trip. We all took a snorkeing trip together.
Your classic trap fisherman at work. These fisherman paddle a home made dugout canoe from the mouth of the river to out off the western tip of Jamaica and place traps that are hand made with bamboo and chicken wire in 30-50ft. of water by lowering them by hand and by eye next to coral out-crops. These traps harvest the seafood for the resident population and to some extent for tourist comsumption.
The boom in tourism has made for the need to now regulate the fishing industry even more, especially the local lobster fishery due to the recent heavy demands on food supplies. Gone are the days of a two dollar $US lobster diner on the beach under the palms.
