Owen Field

In 1923, the first football game was played at what is now Owen Field. It was named after Bennie Owen, a former OU coach and contribuator of the money for the new stadium. In 1925, a portion of what is now the west side of the present stadium was completed. It accommodated 15,000. The stadium was named Memorial Stadium in memory of university associated individuals who died in World War I. Thus OU retains the unique situation of having the playing field known by one name - Owen Field - and the stadium by another name - Memorial Stadium.
