MY TONSILS!

Do you remember the big day,
The day you had your tonsils out?
Well, I do…partly…and,
It certainly wasn’t a day to shout about!

I was three years old,
Or…maybe closer to four;
Here I was…in my highchair,
And, doctor walked in the door!

I should have sensed something,
Something not being quite right;
A thing…like a tea strainer…placed over my nose,
And, I didn’t have a chance…to put up a fight!

The next thing that I remember,
Being held over the kitchen sink…was I;
“Spit…spit into the sink”,
Such a sight!…I won’t deny!

Yes, in fact…MY TONSILS,
They had been removed;
Nobody had asked me,
I know that…I never approved!

A lot of colds…yes, I had them,
And, the solution…‘out’ they’d have to come;
The only treatment available…at that time,
Although, nobody really knew the outcome.

Well, I lived…truth be told,
And, I’m alive still…today;
So, it must have been good advice,
No matter what people…now say.

Recovery time…I don’t remember,
Ice cream for the swelling…I don’t think so;
Some things are not worth remembering,
And, some things…`tis better not to know!

I had seen doctor at my birth,
Although…I don’t recall!
And, I’d seen doctor remove MY TONSILS,
Then, for 10 years…no doctor at all!

Back in those days…we felt no need,
To see a doctor very often;
People pretty much took care of themselves,
But, that’s another story…for another time…I reckon!
