CHAPTER EIGHT

New Message

Sam Fife came by in the early Spring of 1972 - he had a message that would change all of our lives. He ministered out of the book of Revelation, about the woman fleeing into the wilderness where she had a place prepared for her of God. (Rev. 12) It spoke to some of our hearts and the desire to hear from the Lord (individually), concerning the next step for us.

Joe and I prayed about it a lot; we began to feel the Lord was speaking to us about going to the wilderness. Joe had a good job, one he enjoyed; we had the 8 children to think about, our house, a car we had just bought. All of this was in our mind as we continued to be before the Lord - wanting His will above everything else.

A school psychologist came over to our house and spoke with me about Peter. He said that the government could take Peter away from us and hook him up with electronic wires to do brain-wave tests on him, and then give him the necessary medicine. He said dyslexia was a newly discovered brain disorder, and treatment was still in experimental stages - Peter would be a "guinea pig". We stood firm and said we wouldn't allow it. He reminded us that the State is allowed to take children away from their parents, if the parents won't allow treatment.

We were beginning to hear more from the Lord about going to the wilderness to live. We saw a movie that was all about the wilderness - actually, it was so real that it scared us a little. Then I saw a Walt Disney movie about Johnny Appleseed; and how John Chapman had started out in Leominster, Massachusetts (where we lived), and planted apple seeds all across the land. There was a song in the movie: "The Lord is good to me, and so I thank the Lord for giving me the things I need, the rain and the sun and the appleseed: the Lord is good to me. I wake up every day as happy as can be, because I know that with His care the appleseed will still be there; the Lord is good to me." It really spoke to me about going out across the land and planting seed (Seed is a type of His Word).

I had another vision of the same big angel over our house - he was blowing on a large, gold trumpet. I knew it was time to heed his call...

We felt we had heard from the Lord, to go, and asked Bill to get visions to see if it was confirmed as the Word of the Lord, for us. He called a few places and in a few days the elders called him back. All of the visions showed it was time to go (and they didn't even know what it was all about), just that it was time to go. At first we assumed that we could wait until the next Spring, but that was "our way" of thinking, and not necessarily the Lord.

Sam had ministered that when the Lord spoke, for us to go, we should go in the cheapest possible way. We bought a school bus from a man who drove children to school; he also sold fish and chips where we went all the time. (The bus was old and being retired that year; he wanted $800 for the bus.) We were into numerics of Scripture, at the time, and the number 8 meant "new beginnings", so we felt that was a sign to go ahead with the bus. Also, the number on the bus was 12, I believe (which, numerically, meant Governmental perfection - God's Theocracy.)

Joe drove the bus home, parked it in our driveway - and we began tearing the seats out of the bus. Joe drew up some plans on how we could have sleeping space for 10 people, plus living space. We were beginning to feel that the Lord wanted us to go right away, not wait until Spring. We asked Bob to get Words for us, to see if the Lord confirmed that also. He called a few places for visions. I guess one of the places he called was Bangor, Maine (Dan Robertson), the answer came back: "I don't know what the visions were for, but they show that there is a real urgency in going somewhere, immediately.") Right on...

I remember one of the visions said a man was in a paint store; he picked out a shade of green paint (meaning, green = life). The man gave the can of paint to an employee to have it mixed on a machine; as it mixed, a little bit of the color brown was beginning to come into the paint (it didn't belong there). The brown meant "the flesh" was beginning to come into the paint. So, there was an urgency coming in, before the flesh got into what we were doing. As it turns out - right after we left, there was a real shaking going on in the local assembly. Some of the brethren got into health food (to the extreme), a father who wasn't attending meetings went to court and got custody of their children, there was a real shaking.

We had prayed about how much to ask for the house, and Joe felt the Lord spoke $18,000; so Joe told the Lord that if He wanted us to go, He would send a buyer that evening, who would offer just that amount. (We had paid $10,800 for the house.) My sister Irene said she had a friend who was just starting out in real estate; he wanted to know if he could come over and see our place. We said we wanted to sell our place on our own, but he could come over if he wanted to. He walked through the house, walked around the yard, then said he would like to make us an offer. He said, "$18,000" - we said, "Yes". The realtor said he wanted the dining room set, the piano, the swimming pool; later he moved these things into his own home.

I got cold-feet right about now and wanted to back out. But, Joe stood firm and I knew I couldn't survive on my own, I also knew the Lord had spoken - it doesn't mean it will be easy... He's always given me plenty of grace to get through anything He had ahead for me.

The Lord gave me a scripture in the book of Ruth 1:16,17:

"Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following thee:
for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge:
thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried:
the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me."

I knew from this that I was to go with Joe, that it was all in the perfect plan of the Lord. Many times, during the trip to Canada, I had to hang onto these Words - I went through a lot of unneeded stress; not so, if I had really trusted the Lord and what He had spoken to me.
