Studying the Underground Railroad with Celia and Eleni

In the beginning

The Underground Railroad was named unofficialy in 1833 when a slave escaped across the Ohio River. The slave's owner said he "must've escaped on some kind of underground railroad." on of the most famouse "conductors" of the railroad was Harriet Tubman. She being an escaped slave herself made it her duty in life to save other slaves from this injustice. She helped over 300 slaves escape a life of misery. Most slaves ran north, usually to Canada. Henry "Box" Brown however, was one of many who came north not by a route with others, but alone in a creative way. Henry shipped himself in a small box to go north. He arrived safe, but with some bumps and brusis. He was later known as a legend, a man who fought for his freedome. Most slaves were owned by plantation owners. Slaves were used for feild work and house work.
