Tobias was quite young when he arrived in Maryland with his parents in 1658. Records show that he started to acquire land for himself at a very early age. In January 1670 or 1671 when he was 17 years of age 100 acres of land in Baltimore County called "Poplar Neck" were assigned to him from George Yate of Anne Arundel County. The patent is dated July 10, 1671. In the Baltimore County rent rolls, the date of the survey of Poplar Neck (which lay on the south side of Bear Creek) is given as Jan 16, 1672 and possessor, Tobias Stanborough was a member of the Baltimore County March Court in 1683 or 1684.
