Sega Megadrive
Released as Genesis in USA and Japan, and the proper, if stupid name Megadrive in the UK and Europe, Sega's 16 bit console had many classic games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Micro Machines Military, Virtua Racing, and many little known classics. Sega supported the Megadrive untill the bitter end, and it is still available in shops, in my area anyway. The Megadrive was in competition with the Amiga from it's launch, with the two machines being almost evenly matched: Amiga had better sounds, but a slightly slower peocessor. Amiga graphics were superior, but had to be careful of slow down. When the SNES came along, the Megadrive had a new rival. SNES was technically superior, but Nintendo, as always, made quite a few cock-ups, including censorship of blood and violence in games. This didn't do Nentendo any good, as most console players at the time were little kids who were really impressed by Mortal Kombat.
Megadrive emulators are all free ware, and most do a good job of graphics. However, they usually fall down on sound. Genecyst, by Bloodlust software, one of the few genuinely talented programming teams, first added almost-good sound; it could play digitised sound as well as generated sounds. GenEm is an emulator which was the first on the scene, but is crap, as it has fallen behind in the race for improvement, and I think has been stopped altogether. But the generated sounds are crap in all of them, sounding all corrupted and fuzzy. EXCEPT! for Kgen. Kgen is a miracle. Full sound, a GUI, full joy stick support, constantly updated, most ROMs work. I could go on. I have deemed Kgen so good I have used up a whole 237k of my precious 2Mb Web space, so you can download it now, without following any crappy links to other sites, which change without warning. So download Kgen now. If you have a P133 or above, you will have full screen, full speed Megadrive gaming fun. Kgen works on any P75 with 8Mb of RAM. Get ROMs (games) for Kgen from The Dump, which is a great site, full of games.
