Humus Giantbane is the son of the cavalier Strum "Stumpy" Giantbane. Stumpy was born into a house of lower nobility (and his son Humus therefore gains similar rank and status in the realm). He was well known for help ridding the lands of the crazed, psychotic psionicist - Alsymir the Psich. After this final, great battle, Stumpy was charged to go to the Abyss and Hell and to destroy several of the major demons and devils. As Stumpy was preparing for this new quest (getting provisions and such), he disappeared without a trace. His family spent the fortune that he had accumulated to try to locate him (by all means - including magical and divine), but he couldn’t be found. Everyone is baffled as to what happened to him.

For years, tales of Stumpy’s battles have been told through the taverns. One of his most famous is: He and 5 other adventurers were exploring a cavern. At one point right after they crossed a natural rock bridge, a death knight and lich attacked the party from the other side of the bridge (Note: this is a deadly combination - only upper level characters stand a chance). When the death knight launched a fireball (20 die - OUCH!) everyone in the party but Stumpy and a fighter-mage died. The monsters were on the bridge, and the fighter-mage was able to cast "turn rock to mud" dropping the lich and death knight to the level below. After that, the lich levitated itself back up while the death knight had to claw itself up the wall (taking it out of the fight for a whlie). The fighter-mage cast "wall of force" blocking off part of the corridor. Stumpy then started throwing javelins of lightening at the lich. The corridor was not long enough and the bolt of lightening bounced off the far wall and hit the wall of force (which Stumpy (and the fighter-mage) was behind after he let the javelin go. The lich was hit multiple times and fell back onto the lower level. It then levitated up, and the process repeated. Needless to say that after a while of this, the lich was finally defeated. Then the death knight was finally able to pull itself up and get back into the fight. Stumpy and the fighter-mage were able to slice him to ribbons easily. When it was all over, the two remaining adventurers dragged their companions to the nearest temple to be brought back to life.

Humus was but a lad when his father Stumpy disappeared, but his father had already started his cavalier training. Over the years since his father's disappearance, he has grown strong and quick. He has spent most of his time training in various weapons and tactics, but he has also spent a lot of time in the castle learning the finer points of etiqutte and studying books in the royal library. He carries himself with an air of authority, but he is still humbled when those in the court speak of his father. In battle he is fearless - driving on when lesser men would be retreating. He is a natural leader - confident and proud, but he is not ashamed to ask others for advice when needed. He tries to plan out his battles before rushing off to fight. However, sometimes his sense of justice and honor get the better of him, and he rushes off to right a wrong or to save an ally. He has always dreamed of building up an army and leading them to glory.

He takes great pride in having his father's first set of armor - which he shines until it has a mirror-like finish every day. His finely crafted sword hangs in its scabbard on one side and a horseman's mace on the other. He also carries his shield which bears his family's crest - a griffon in flight. He is never without these items - and even sleeps with them on (or at least very very near).

Humus has come of age, and his aristocratic and cavalier training is finally complete. The family’s coffers were so depleted by the search for Stumpy that Humus’ inheritance is his father’s early weapons and armor - and the horse, Valor, that Humus raised as a lad.

The quest that Stumpy took on has now fallen to Humus. He is honor bound to eventually complete the quest that his father was unable to even begin. However, Humus is not powerful enough to last any length of time in the lower realms, and the shadow of his father's greatness looms over him. He now builds his strength and looks for tools, weapons, and allies for when he makes his fateful journey.
