The History of Alpha Kappa Alpha

          The oldest and greatest Greek-Letter Organization established in America by African American women was founded on January 15, 1908. On the campus of Howard University a grand vision was brought to reality by sixteen dynamic women.

         This contempary sororityuniquely added the elements of friendship and close association to the academic and literary tradition of earlier college societies. From this grand vision, a legacy of membership standards of high scholarship, leadership, service and exemplary character has risen.
 

       The extrodinary women who organized Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority were conscious of the priviledge and responsibility of college trained women, one generation away from slavery, and the women were determined that their college experience should be as meaningful and as valuable as possible in enhancing their capacity for significant self-realization. As the new years bring new hopes and dreams,

        Alpha Kappa Alpha continues this great legacy of success while being "of service to all mankind". Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has membership of 200,000+ women. Our undergraduate and alumnae chapters are located throughout the United States, West Africa, the United Kingdom, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Korea, Germany, and the Bahamas.

        There are no average or even typical Alpha Kappa Alpha women. They fit no common physical descriptions or economic characteristics, yet they are all the same--these women who wear the twenty pearls. You can identify them by the smiles on their faces and the love in their eyes.
