Layout
The process of placing graphical elements on the page in such a way that it leads the eye through the material so it communicates in the most effective way.
Types of Graphical Imagery
Cartoon
1. A picture story that illustrates an Idea using analogy, parody and exaggeration for effect, to convey information
2. A "quick sketch" of an idea, instead of the fully developed final production. Management cartoons are often charts of boxes and arrows used to describe a process. Cartoons emphasize how people are effected in the situation, not technical or historical accuracy. Cartoons excel at illustrating problems, and illustrating possibilities.
Note: The English term "Comic" is misleading. Most "comics" are illustrated stories that are not necessarily humorous. A bettor idea of what the term comic means can be shown by foreign terms
French: "Band Dessinee'" -BD for short-meaning a drawn strip
Italian: "Fumetto" -a little puff of smoke, after the dialogue balloons
German-use a term meaning "picture story"
Chart
A data-driven graphical image, used to convey data. Usually things like "how much" or "how many" How often", etc. Examples would include Bar Charts, Pie Charts, Gantt Charts
Illustration
A graphical image that represents an object, an event, an idea or a process.
Model
A set of graphical images having a specific syntax that represents a design. examples would be designs for: Systems, Data or information.
Picture
A pictures is anything from a rough pencil "scrawl", to a full color illustrations. Pictures conveys information visually.
Symbol
An image that conveys information. Examples include:

A Graphical Image, Drawing or Cartoon that specifically illustrates technological ideas, concepts, processes, methods and component.
