Minutes of October 10, 1998 Meeting, 12 noon at Jay's Sporting Goods
Meeting called to order by President Ed Spinazzola. Board members present: Ed Spinazzola, Phil Andres, Ted Novak and Boyd Wiltse. General membership attendees: Dave Bowman, Leon Brown, Gary Hoffman, Lynn Grencz, Bruce Patterson, Adrianne Pringle, Dick Shellenbarger and Al Urban.
Ed opened the meeting with a brief prayer reminding us to be thankful for another magnificent day to be alive and enjoy the woods. New members Dave Bowman, Leon Brown and Gary Hoffman were to the introduced to the group.
Secretary Report: Motion by Ted Novak to accept secretary report for August meeting as printed and mailed to the general membership. Motion 2nd by Bruce Patterson. Motion carried.
Treasurer Report: Treasurer Phil Andres reported that the raffle ticket sales grossed $6,855 and the net proceeds were $4,425. And when adding in seminar proceeds, the totals for gross and net income were $7,308 and $5,432, respectively. Motion by Ted Novak and 2nd by Dick Shellenbarger to accept treasurer's report as read and pay all outstanding bills.
Education Report: Thanks to the general public, volunteers, Michigan D.N.R., QDMA members and speakers, the September 12, 1998 Educational Seminar was an outstanding event. The speakers did an outstanding job of presenting their material and answering any questions. It was unanimously agreed that a committee meeting would be held October 31, 1998, 12 noon at the Gladwin DNR office to determine seminar dates for next year's seminar. Committee members include Ed Spinazzola, Ted Novak, Dick Shellenbarger and Bruce Patterson.
The group also agreed that it was important for us to remain visible and actively pursue QDM education activities throughout the year. In this regard, QDMA members will assist D.N.R. personnel in manning a deer aging station at Jay's Sporting Goods on November 7th and December 12th. Bruce Patterson will make arrangements with Jay's including advertising/notice to the deer hunters.
Dick Shellenbarger outlined D.N.R. activities for establishing a formal procedure for evaluating Quality Deer Management proposed programs. Dr. Bill Moritz is chairing the committee, and an initial meeting was held in August. The second meeting will be held October 22nd and will include input from public organization representatives including MUCC, Wildlife Unlimited, Mid-Michigan Branch QDMA, Law Enforcement, etc. A third meeting will be scheduled to establish a timetable for establishing QDM benchmarks/measurement criteria for evaluating QDM programs and public support.
Boyd Wiltse presented evaluation of our web site. Based on the success of educating and attracting new members, Bruce Patterson motioned that we budget and pay the web site operating costs (about $50 per month for the phone line and Internet Service Provider) for a year. Motion 2nd Al Urban. Motion carried.
Ted Novak led a discussion on the proposed Hunter Award Program. It was agreed that a successful quality deer management patch would be awarded based on specific criteria established by the hunter award committee. Committee members are Dave Bowman, Leon Brown, Gary Hoffman and Dick Shellenbarger.
Officer/Director Nominations: All officers/directors present at the meeting indicated their desire to continue to serve the Branch in their present capacities. Ed will contact the remaining officers/directors to determine their interest in being nominated for a second term. Any members interested in being nominated are encouraged to contact Ed and be present at the January 9, 1999 meeting, when all officers/directors will be elected for a two-year term.
New Business: After a brief discussion, Boyd Wiltse motioned that our bimonthly meeting schedule be changed to quarterly with meetings for the next year scheduled for January 9, 1999, April 10, 1999, July 10, 1999 and October 9, 1999 (all on Saturday, 12 noon at Jay's Sporting Goods, Clare, MI). Motion 2nd by Ted Novak. Motion carried.
Bruce Patterson motioned that nametags be furnished to those who show up for meetings or personally contact Ed or Boyd. Motion 2nd by Dick Shellenbarger. Motion carried.
Announcements: The next regular quarterly meeting for the Mid-Michigan Branch QDMA will be Saturday, January 9, 1999, 12 Noon at Jay's Sporting Good's, On Old US 27, one mile north of Clare, MI.
