Minutes of August 15, 1998 Meeting, 12 noon at Jay's Sporting Goods
Meeting called to order by President Ed Spinazzola. Board members present: Ed Spinazzola, Frank Myers, Ted Novak and Boyd Wiltse. General membership attendees: Lee Brooks, Sheila Jacobson, Bob Jacobson and Al Urban.
Secretary Report: Minutes approved with correction to status of Mid Forest Lodge (MFL) deer-feeding program. The minutes should have stated that the MFL Board of Directors is studying a possible reduction to the feeding program (minutes incorrectly indicated the deer-feeding program was being reduced).
Treasurer Report: Treasurer Phil Andres was unable to attend and passed along the following information. There is currently $2,000 in the Mid-Michigan Branch QDMA bank account and there is approximately $550 in raffle ticket returned money. Current unpaid operating expenses approximate $200. Treasurer's Report was unanimously accepted.
Education Report and raffle ticket sales presented by Ed Spinazzola: With Dick Shellenbarger's input and help, we have an impressive educational program. And combining the raffle ticket drawing with the seminar should increase interest. The guns are paid for and the approximate $2,500 in our Mid-Michigan Branch bank account should pay about 2/3 of the seminar expense (another $1,000 should get us out of the red). The increased Branch membership has about doubled our mailing expense (as a result of picking up the general QDMA members in Michigan). In this regard, the raffle ticket sales at Jay's is very helpful in generating income. We have next weekend of August 22nd and 23rd and the Labor Day weekend of September 4th, 5th and labor day the 7th at Jay's. We need help!
Lee Brooks, Bruce Patterson, Carol Morton and Pat Myers have volunteered to help out at the seminar. Their responsibility will be to collect entrance fees, distribute door prize tickets and distribute door prizes. Anyone can bring door prizes to the seminar. See Lee Brooks or Bruce Patterson. Mr. Jim Williams has donated (2) $25 Jay's gift certificates. There will be (3)-framed prints given out at the seminar (two from Jay's and one QDMA print) through a 52 card raffle at $10 per card, one game (3) winners. This same group will also have door prize winners fill out a thank you and they will also draw the (5) raffle ticket winners.
Frank Myers motioned that (2) QDMA memberships and videos are given out as door prizes during the seminar. Motion 2nd by Lee Brooks. Motion carried.
Ted Novak led a discussion on a 1998 Hunter Award Program. Several ideas were discussed and it was agreed that Ted would present a proposal for a fun Hunter Award Program at our October 10th meeting.
Old Business: Thanks to Jay's and the (11) Mid-Michigan Branch volunteers for the August 8th kid's day event. It certainly was an overwhelming success.
New Business: The Mid-Michigan Branch has been asked to be a designated food plot tester. There will be a comparison of food plots between the Mossy Oak biologic rape & kale fall attractant, and various other common plantings such as wheat, clover, rye or turnips.
QDMA has a package membership for hunt clubs and QDM co-op groups. To qualify for a discount, there needs to be a minimum of 25 members and there will probably be a sliding payment scale depending on the number of members. Details to follow.
As Ed says, let's keep the fun in hunting and deer management!
