Corruption - personal and political - is the subject of John Sayles' City Of Hope, a piercing look at a decaying East Coast city. From the heights of City Hall, where favors are bought and sold, to the steaming streets, where petty punks are harassed by racust cops, Sayles explores every gritty detail of urban life. Weaving a story filled with humor and irony, he addresses the most volatile issues of city life: bigotry and violence. Leading the ensemble cast is Joe Morton as Wynn, an honest politician drowning in a crooked world. When faced with a racial controversy that could destroy the city, his leadership heals the community but betrays his own conscience. Vincent Spano stars as the rebellious son of a corrupt contractor, played by Tony Lo Bianco, who wants to escape his father's "fixed" world. Like Wynn, his life intersects in surprising ways with the powerful and the powerless, providing Sayles a broad canvas for his riveting portrait of urban America. "City Of Hope has the sweeping power and scope of such American epics as the Godfather movies." (Kathleen Carroll, New York Daily News)
